Replacing steering wheel buttons

Hello all,

Anyone ever have to replace any of the button modules on the steering wheel? The main cruise control button is no longer staying depressed, so I effectively have no cruise. New button module is on the way, just looking to get some ideas on how to replace it. Seems like it should be fairly simple - pop plastic trim piece off and I'm guessing button modules attach via a plug and are held in place by a screw or two, but I am hoping someone has done this and can verify before I start trying to pry something that might just snap on me.

Hey buddy,

I haven't physically done it on our cars, but at Hyundai I've done a few and it looks similar.

It's likely you'll have to pull the whole steering wheel off to do this. You'll need to remove the airbag which requires what looks like a T25 or T30 torx, you'll see those screws in the side of the steering wheel. After that, if you are able to take just the buttons and cover off, you'll see the screws readily available. If it seems to not move easily, then you're going to have to remove the steering wheel by taking the large nut off right in the middle, usually a 14 or 17mm. Sometimes the steering wheel can be a pain to get off but the best bet is to leave the nut threaded on by a couple threads, and then taking your hands behind the wheel and popping your hands towards you. After the wheel is off, it should just be taking a few more screws out to get the portion you're going for.

Couple things to note: DO NOT pull the connectors from the airbag with the battery still attached. Horror stories include the ever so slight voltage spike and/or resistance change from the connectors sliding by each other to blow the airbag. Disconnect the battery and wait at least 5 min before disconnecting the airbag connectors. Secondly, take some white-out or a sharpie and mark the steering wheel and the stud so that when you go back together, the wheel will be straight. Otherwise you could get VSA and AWD codes because the wheel is off center.

Don't let me scare you away from this, it's rather simple, just some super simple cautions to take prior to digging in. And as always, if something isn't coming off simply, don't pry harder, companies like to hide screws.

Thank you for the reply. Judging from the diagram, I'm guessing I need to yank the wheel and remove the screws from the rear. Need to replace part#6. Pulled the airbag out a but and there was no visible way to remove the cover that I could see. I'll tackle it this weekend when I have more time.

Sorry I can't be of more assistence. I can knock stuff out quickly while I'm doing it, but if I'm not, I can only assume the steps.

Before you take the whole wheel off, it appears there may be some screws going in from the back side, at the bottom, to aid in holding on to the cover around the buttons and stuff, that may help. But it also kind of appears theres some screws from the back side to hold the buttons in place as well.

In any event, you'll be fine man. Like I mentioned, just take the negative battery off and cruise right along taking things off as you see fit.

So I pounded this out yesterday morning. Ended up having to remove the steering wheel completely, remove the rear plastic cover, and remove several more screws that attach all of the buttons to the front of the wheel. All together took me about an hour and a half though, so not too bad. The steering wheel and hub are both already marked, so sliding it back on in the correct position was no issue at all. It was a bit of a bitch to remove, but your technique worked well - thanks again for the tips!
