Helicopter Sound???

I was driving home from a trip and when I rolled down both back windows ( and none of the front) it starts to make a very loud noise... It really sounds like you're in a helicopter when going 65 or so and it hurts your ears, like you're going up in altitude. Is this normal?

Well I would guess it would be pretty loud with any window down at 65, especially with the air circulating through the cabin like that.

I mean it wasn't just loud... The whole car simutaneously rattled. And was extremely loud. Like... I don't know how to explain it, that's why I used the helicopter metaphor. However I'm guessing most people havent been in a helo.

I know what you're talking about. I figured it had something to do with the aerodynamics of any car when you lower the rear windows at speed, It's not just the RDX.

I remember years ago when I rolled down the rear windows on my 91 honda accord. I started to pull over thinking I had a flat tire, or was dragging something. Since then, I never roll down my back windows without first rolling down the front, or sunroof.

ah yes, very annoying! I've experienced the same thing, and have tried everything to reduce that sound, including opening the sunroof. Coming from a 2 door coupe, I thought it would be nice to be able to drop the back windows for the dog, so he could stick his head out, but that sound makes it unbearable!

I call it boomin. I would guess that it happens with the rear passenger windows because the air hits the rear window and fights itself to escape. The front windows are further away from the back, and get a better swirl?
Open the sun roof 6 inches or crack the drivers window. That will help.
I wish these new SUVs had power rear vents on the windows above the rear wheels.
I had manual ones on Pontiac POS hatchback that I had in the 80s. Creates a nices draw, because they were rear facing.

it happens in my RDX, and GX470. It happened in my mountaineer and my volvo. I learned about it when my son learned how to role down the windows. The booming drives me crazy. Now my son does it when he wants to annoy me.
