I haven't had this car more than 5 days, and this morning on the highway, I heard the dreaded noise, and some kind of small object hit the windshield. So I have a star smaller than a quarter on the front windshield, passenger side, towards the top.

Very bummed out. But, what I want to know is, what do you recommend for getting it repaired? How do you find reputable glass shops? Any thoughts on Safelite or Elite Auto Glass?

Thanks in advance.

If you call your insurance agent, my experience is that most times this is covered for free. My carriers have always used Safelite. No complaints from me on them. They will come to you at work or home, etc. and fix it. Takes about 10 or 15 minutes. Get it fixed asap, though, so it doesn't turn into a bigger problem, esp. with winter temp fluctuations. Sorry to hear about it, I know that is disappointing.

Depending on where you live, and who you insure with, the insurance company may have a repair tried first, especially if the star is smaller than a quarter.

In any case, put a piece of clear tape over the star immediately to prevent contamination from working its way into the crack.

If you are required to do a repair, rather than a replace, the success of the repair is highly dependent on the amount of contamination in the crack. The repair is done with a small vacuum chamber applied over the crack, and the ability of the resin, which has the same index of refraction as glass (i.e., it is nearly invisible if it works) to penetrate the cracks is affected by the amount of contamination that has worked its way between the crack. The longer you wait, the less successful the repair will be, because of contamination.
