Bald tire woes

Unfortunately, I am on here once again reporting on my tire wear problems. I got 17k out of the stock tires before they were near bald. I replaced them with a set of 80k treadwear Goodyear assurance comfort treads. 18k later after regular rotations and inner and outer sides are bald again! WTF. First I plan on taking this thing to the dealer to check the alignment. Then, I'll consider buying my third set of tire for this 35k car. The wear pattern is indicative of under inflation. I always keep 31-33 psi in the front and 30-32 psi in the rear. Should I run them much higher? What do you guys think is the problem?

I run mine higher, 240KPA at cold for all tires (all of them should be the same rate)

Stock tires, 40k (km's) and still look like they can take another two winters.

I run the stock psi of 32 and with 16,000 miles my tires look like they have at least another 12k left in them. That said I am in FLorida and the roads here are much more friendly on tires as we dont have snow. I have heard that the roads in some states are quite harsh on tires..dont know if true or not.

17,500k & look they could go another 15-20k easy. new england....

when you got such poor mileage out of the stock set, had you ever checked the alignment then? Given it happened on your new set, maybe its not alignment, maybe something is bent under there...i mean i think you would know alignment given how your steering wheel is and if the car is going straight or not....good luck

my stock needed to be replaced after about 30k, i used winter rims and tires for the winter, so this was pretty much strictly spring/summer wear

My stocks had 52k on them and still had plenty of tread when I sold it. Definitely sounds like an alignment problem.

I keep my tires at 35 psi, but I only have 2500 miles on them to date.

What is a fair price for an alignment on this thing? Should I go to the dealer.

I assume it will be the same as TL pricing wise. Then it's around $90 -$100
I paid $90 something no tax (yeah i know that's odd)

If you go out most bigger auto shop charge $75- 100
I have seen a chinese shop charged me only $50 for other LEXUS (Yes 4 wheels, not front 2)

By the way i remember there's a chain store (was it Firestone?) out there have lifetime alignment like $200. May be yo should check it out.

Goof luck

40k before new were needed in SE Texas. Sounds like alignment to me, also.

Weird thing is the car goes straight down the road with no hands on the steering wheel. I'll definitely get the alignment checked before putting on yet another set of tires. Thaks for all the advice.

Don't forget that most roads have some kind of grade to them. So if your alignment is off close to the opposite of the grade of the road that could be why you're going straight. It's a stretch but could be what's going on and causing your tires to wear a lot quicker.

almost 30k and will need new rubber in 3-5k miles on all four tires. Driven hard on corners and some harsh winter months here in NYC, not to mention some of the worst roads in the country...

Almost 20k on mine, thread wear looks good for another 15k. YOu def have something really bad - sounds like too much toe in from your description. Basically the outer most of the tire is almost being pushed.

This might help you interpret your tire wear: http://www.procarcare.com/includes/c...dtirewear.html

Good luck getting it sorted out.

To update this story: Went to Acura dealer. They checked alignment and it was perfect. They suggested I go to the tire dealer and attempt to have them make good on the treadwear warranty. Surprisingly, the tire dealer agreed that the tires were wearing poorly and measured the deepest tread depth. 4 to 5 mm at the deepest points in center, bald on the inside or outside edges. He suggested that I drive on them for another month or so to get them down to 2 mm and then he would pro rate them out on a new set. He did mention that my uneven wear could be a result of going with a set of tires (Goodyear Comfort tread) that was 3 speed ratings lower than what came on the car. We live in a mountainous area where a daily drive to work is like a down hill slalom. Based partially on advice from the forum, I am planning on ordering a set of the Yokohama Avid V4S as replacements.

I'm glad it all worked out for you. It's just annoying that you had to go through all that to get an answer. But hopefully the Yoko's will treat you well.
