Bad rear shock
Bad rear shock
My 2012 has a bad passenger rear shock. Started hearing a clunking over sharp bumps the other day. I started pushing down on the rear end on that side to test it and heard this sloshing sound. I got underneath and could hear it from the shock. Then I grabbed it and got oil/grease on my hand on one side of the shock. Nothing on the other one.
Called dealer this morning and the serviceman said he had never heard of the shocks going bad before 100k miles so they don't stock them and he would have to order it then replace. 22k miles. I live in michigan.
I read a thread under the 2nd gen that said you shouldn't replace just one, especially when there's significant mileage difference (thread said greater than 5k).

No dealership service writer has ever heard of anything going wrong -- and if your car has a problem, then you are the only one.
It is generally accepted that dampers should be replaced in pairs. The assumption is that identical parts have about the same service life.
However, at only 1 year and 22k miles, you should have no problem replacing only the failed damper. It failed very early and was apparently defective.
I replaced our rear right damper at 30k miles and the original rear left damper lasted another 30k miles with no strange characteristics.
