What about 0W-30 oil?

The local wal-mart is always sold out of oil due to a shop owner who goes in there when they get stock and fills up two shopping carts of 5 quart Mobil 1 oil becuase they sell it cheaper than the drum price that the shop owner has access to. So I go in there and there is only 1 5 quart jug available and its the 0W-30 Synthetic so I decide to buy it since im on 40% oil life and will need a change soon. So my concern is that on Mobil 1's site they do not give this oil as an option for our cars but on the label of the jug it says warranty protection for 5W-30 and 10W-30 applications, does anybody think that this 0W oil would not be good for this turbo car?

I know that this is a newer oil and is supposed to handle cold starts better, higher temps as well as less work for the oil pump that generates 2% better MPGs.

I would not use 0W30 oil in an RDX. It does not have as much phosphorus and zinc as 5W30 Mobil-1. If you do use it, change it early.

The RDX does not use roller-followers on the engine cams, but follower "fingers". And why does that matter? Rollers have much less friction than even finger-followers, and of course, there is the ongoing discussion of cam damage in older engines which do not use either type of followers.

Roller followers have only been used since about 1995 or so, and not in all engines.

But again, the RDX does not use roller cams, and in my opinion, the reduction in both phosphorus and zinc to make the CATS last longer, is the source of the damage to non-roller cams (scuffing and scoring). I think that the current SL oils are already too low, in these two specific additives, and there are thousands of threads online concerning this issue.

Yes the EPA has decided that they would rather you had to 'fix' your damaged engine, rather than replace a catalytic converter. The EPA wants you to replace your entire valve train in the engine, so that your CATS can last 150K rather than only 100K miles.

But decide for yourself:

Mobil-1 0W30 phosphorus=650 zinc=750
Mobil-1 5W30 phosphorus=800 zinc=900
Mobil-1 5W30HM (high mileage) phosphorus=1000 zinc=1100

And no, I do not recommend using the HM oil either. I have listed it as a comparison. The Mobil-1 HM oils are only rated API SL, and neither SM or SN which is the latest rating (SN).

I MIGHT use 0W30 if I lived in Alaska, and it was the middle of winter (-40).

maybe thats why mobil one doesnt even recommend it. Maybe ill try to exchange it if I can even find 5W30 which sounds crazy. If I find it I may just buy a case.

If your @ 40%, why not hold off for the right stuff. Although the 0W Oil will flow better in a cold engine.

Maybe it wont be a huge deal since this car pretty much wants an oil change around 3,500K

Ok so I just happen to be at another wal-mart and I found an almost fully stocked shelf so I decided to treat myself.

You do know there are other oils that meet HTO-06 testing.

Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra are two I'd choose over M1.
