Vortex Generator

Common sense tells me this is a load of crap, but can anyone clarify what exactly this is for? Googling "vortex generator" didn't really bring up much of anything except the ones used on wings to create more downforce (ex: the "fins" on a Mitsubishi EVO).

Any info would be appreciated; this just has me scratching my head.

To partially answer my own question, I found this on Yahoo Answers:
There have been many anecdotal reviews and independent tests from cars of all makes. In short, if your car is newer than 1980 then it will make no power or even hinder the performance. The cars ECU (electronic control unit) will in essence defeat the vortex generator effects. If your car is carburated then you may have a slight increase in power.

Uh....me? In fact I'll sell you 3 of them, and you can install all 3. Then you'll have 590HP and you'll be getting around 50MPG for only $30.

hahahahaha!!

Funny stuff. I'm just trying to figure out how it's supposed to work... I think they're selling it as something to cool the air in the intake--but yes, I'm sure if it really worked that well, it wouldn't be a $9 trinket on ebay.

How could it not work? I heard it's a great addition to the flux capacitor

haha!! I love the review. I added it to my cart and it didn't have a special message or something... wonder if they really would let you spend that sort of money. More power to them if they do.

You're supposed to drop it into your intake ... I believe the theory is that it causes the air to spin (creating a vortex) and therefore enters the intake manifold faster.

Of course car manufactures would definitely choose less power and crappy gas milage over installing $0.50 worth of aluminum when building a new car
