Lowes sells a foam runner in the carpet section. Buy it by the foot. It is meant to be used as a cushion for areas where one may do a lot of standing. It is easy to cut with scissors. Simply trace your cargo cover on the material and then cut along the line. It makes a perfect fit. The material is grey with ridges in it. I also cut a piece for inside the center console do keep stuff from sliding and making noise.

What I mean is that it is not built like a "tray" is...

 

I suppose a large spill can seep in around the edge. It certainly protects the carpet from dirty sports shoes and other cargo. All-in-all it is great protection.
