Dashboard buttons won't control iPhone

Dashboard buttons won't control iPhone
Hey all,
I just purchased a 2010 RDX and have been trying to get some questions answered about the bluetooth audio but to no avail. I've successfully paired my iPhone 7+ to the HandsFreeLink and my music plays just fine, but the dashboard buttons only let me switch tracks when they feel like working. I can't make heads nor tails of it! Yesterday while on a 30 minute drive, the only way to switch tracks was on my phone itself. When I stopped the car and tried again to change tracks by pressing "seek," it worked!
I went to the HFL FAQ on the Acura website, and according to the information there, the dash buttons *should* be able to control my music. I also use bluetooth headphones and the buttons on them can pause/play/change tracks/adjust volume with no problem, so I don't think the issue is with my phone.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a feature and not a bug?
