Angry Am I the only one having trouble dialing a phone number?

It's extremely frustrating that the system can NEVER dial the correct phone number for me. It keeps mistakening my "3" as "8". Ok I admit I still have an Asian accent even after living here for over 19 years. But I think a 3 sounds very different from a 8 and yet the stupid system just can't figure it out. Is there any other way to dial a number besides using voice dialing? My Lexus IS250 allows me to key in a phone number on the touch screen. I couldn't find any manual dialing function on my RDX.

No offense, but I have attempted many shots at playing around with many accents, and my "asian" performance seems to work pretty damn well. You at least have to be CLEAR, even with a little accent or a lot.

I am asian, but I have no accent, and the system seems to work well in my voice sessions.

No pun intended.

Dial the number on your phone, hit the talk button to dial, and then hit the speaker phone button on your cell phone to send to the HFL.

This is my second Acura with HFL and I've never had any problems with voice recognition.

The voice recognition works okay for me. For some reason though, it has trouble recognizing the word "home" from me. Everything else seemed to be fine. Finally, I changed it to my home number to be under my dog's name, and it gets it right every time. I just hope the dog never picks up the phone!

I'm Asian too and my friends and I were playing around with chinese accents. The RDX still picked up the #s and commands pretty well. I tend to speak a little upward towards the mic and haven't had a problem. Having your fans at even medium speed makes a difference I find.

It took me a while to program "home" into my HFL phonebook. I kept getting the warning that "home" could be mistaken for "zero". And "mom" with "eight". Go figure.

You might want to get your mic re-adjusted, we picked up the rdx today and when i went to try the voice recognition it kept saying im sorry please try again (something like that), they took it into the shop and did something to the mic and now it works perfectly.

Although sometimes when I say find the nearest chinese place it turns on the AC for some reason but thats ok lol.

LMAO! Good idea, though. I haven't programmed my RDX phonebook, but I've always had trouble saying "Home" to my cell phone and having it properly recognized...I kept calling my mom! (Which she loved, of course!) I finally had to change my cell voice command to "Me" instead of "Home." Ha.

I think the problem is universal with any voice-recog system no matter what your nationality is. I find I get the best results with the HFL with the fan OFF and windows up. I don't even give it an opportunity to screw up.

Hey!! I've the same problem too - just to test I said 38383838 and it takes that as 88888888, I say 333333 and it recognizes that at 888888, nothing seems to work. If I say 'Tree' it recognizes that as a 3 -- sometimes. This car is driving me nuts.

Screaming to my RDX

Me and just about anyone who tries the voice Nav/phone always winds up screaming to it eventually. Had my RDX for almost a year, and am looking forward to a trade-in to a vehicle that has touch screen nav.

Forgot to mention that when I ask it for the nearest Macaroni Grill restaurant it gave me the right answer, however the restaurant was in TEXAS -I live in FLORIDA!

Hearing '8' instead of '3' has happened to me on occasion in the last 2 Acuras and a Honda I had. I'm totally Anglo, speak clearly and have a broadcast quality voice. Go figure. Eight. Three. Not even close. Saying it louder doesn't make a difference - reminds me of a stereotype - if someone doesn't understand your English, just say it louder!

I have the '08 RDX tech and the voice works better than I had expected.
My voice is low, but the HFL and Nav understand me 90% of the time. I know the '08 has a significant software upgrade form the '07. Maybe you need to see if the dealer can upgrade you under an "annoyance warranty". The upgrade DVD cost is $180.00. I did hear od an RDX that was returned under the lemon law in NJ because the owner claimed that the NAV problems were creating an unsafe driving enviorment. The car was on ebay for $21k with 2800 miles, with a lemon title. Let the dealer know you will persue this with the your states safety commision.
Good Luck!

Mine is an 08 with the upgrade. The 8 over 3 issue is more amusing than annoyance since it has happened with an 05 Honda, 06 Acura and 08 Acura. My sales rep has a thick accent and it worked perfectly for him. I had a hard time not chuckling. I'm sure that ambient noise may come into play, but I'm working on my really bad Carlos Mencia accent anyway. I hope Carlos sees the humor in this - I do! I love my RDX too much to even go that lemon route.

Seriously, though. I just got my 2008 RDX on Saturday (3 days ago) and tried to give verbal commands to the Nav. It had trouble distinguishing 3 from 8. I got so frustrated, I used the knob/joystick thingy and did it quickly by hand. By the way, I have no accent whatsoever other than middle American news anchorman. I think this is a problem with programming verbal command systems.

I also have a 2007 Saturn Outlook XR. When speaking a telephone number (Onstar) it also occasionally confuses 3s and 8s. Different system; same problem. It seems I have to yell the numbers, and sometimes I have to make sure all systems (e.g. heating and air conditioning fans) are turned off. It's a pain in the ass. It doesn't always happen, and it only happens with 3s and 8s, but it happens enough to be annoying. But at least the system in the Outlook is touch screen. If you have to do it manually, a touch screen is much faster than the RDX's fat ass round joystick thing.

How were you able to dial a phone with the knob/joystick??? I don't think that's possible with my 2008 RDX tech.
