08 Security System

My 08 RDX has been broken into 3 times by late night thieves and I'm wondering if my 08 security system even works. Yes, the security light blinks red.

I lock my car two ways: (1) via the remote and (2) manually locking from the driver side. According to ACURA I need to use the remote to activate the alarm system. According to my drivers manual I can use either the remote or the door lock.

My thought is that I'm either experiencing a stupid user error or the thieves have a work around on the alarm system.

Any insight on how I can - or if I can - prevent further break ins?

Get a 2 way auto starter pager - this way it will alert you.
Get the tilt and shock sensor attachment.

I got the python 991 - 2 mile range
Clifford and python is made by the same company. (Just different name)

Thanks

Thank you for your replies.

Did you two get the viper alarm system because you wanted a remote start-up key or because you experienced trouble with your Acura alarms?

I'm going to test my alarm today to see if it actually works. I'm thinking it doesn't.

Got it for the auto starter feature mainly - but prefer to also have the function to let me know if someone is messing with RDX when it is parked outside.

The 2 way pager is to alert you when someone is messing your car.
Also if someone is too close to your car (Very low alert) - it gives a warning signal to them.

Your car will beep difference to let you know when you get back also

Hoping you can test to see if the acura factory has a problem or not.
Just to let you know in advance 2 way auto starter are not cheap. (To buy and install)

Good thing is that you can keep you valet key now because the newer bypass key module can just be program to remember it.

Hope this helps and good luck.

A customer service rep at the local Acura dealer thinks the thieves have a key to my door. Wonderful.

Like what DateTSX said - garage it or move out.
If that is not possible; get the two way auto starter pager with the backup battery / shock sensor attachment.

I think some unit has a "take a picture" feature where it send the picture to your pager.
Imagine it is a case of the ex where she has a set of your keys. =P

Didn't see an answer to this question yet...but did the thieves break the window(s) or somehow open a door?

If I remember correctly, the factory security system will only go off if someone opens the hood, doors or trunk while the system is armed.

When my Accord was broken into, they just smashed a window, climbed in, took the stereo, climbed out. The car didn't make a peep. After that I got my windows tinted 5% and a 2-way alarm/auto-start. Never had a problem after that.

^ Same issue here. I had a zip up picnic blanket on the back seat that when folded looks just like a 17" lap-top case. Had the car parked outside at my parents house overnight and when I came out in the morning the blanket/case was on the ground and the passenger rear window was smashed. No alarm activation.
If you really want to keep people out the best thing is to get an alarm with an impact sensor and motion detector for the interior. I had an Alpine in my Speed 6 that would chirp if you got within 1ft.

Do aftermarket alarm systems work without problems?
Reason I ask is because they say in the manual not to use aftermarket alarm systems, especially remote starters, what happens to the stock alarm system, is it disabled if you use the viper system or is it integrated into it?

I think a few years ago in San Fran, a person in the Acura service department was making spare keys from the VIN numbers. This person already had their address and robbed the owners without a peep from the alarm.

I had my RDX in to replace the headlight because of condensation and the tech locked the keys in the car at the shop. The service department made a spare key, unlocked the RDX, and gave it to me when I picked it up later that day.

Do you take your RDX to the same dealership for all service? If so, maybe they have a way to track if a request was made for spare valet key?

better yet, get a system like the viper 5902 and add the smart start feature. it makes it so that you can arm, disarm start the car from your smartphone but it also lets you know when the panic and alarm has tripped. good thing is that you can arm disarm start from anywhere you have service. the long range 2 ways distance is only good if there is no buildings blocking it or if you are not at the back of a huge mall.

the install is the most important part of the whole deal tho. if you pay for a expensive alarm and pay for cheap labor, you would of been better off paying for the 25$ walmart alarm. when i install alarms, the brain and wires are installed non typical. thieves know what to look for when they get in to kill/bypass alarms. i blend the wires in and dont use vamp clips. also the brain and shock sensor are put in a different place where it can not be reached, say like behind the radio or inside the driver door. sirens are also placed in hard to reach places. there are some other measures that i do but not going to give them all away.

I know this is an old thread, but I found if I lock with key then door the alarm doesn't work. Got to remember the key activates the alarm the door does not. The door lock only locks the car. Regardless of what the dealer says the key needs to activate the alarm. Could be a fault with the key lock, battery weak or you moved the button to unlock on the key by mistake, This often happens with movement of the key in pocket etc.

I also read some car thieves have already figured out how to code generic keys to open locked doors...

some car sales people make duplicate keys or keep one key saying there is only one key then steal your car...
