The thing that really annoys me that this engine consumes TOO MUCH when idling even w/o a/c. There can be even 9-12 mpg when stuck in severe traffic jam. Can the TMIC be the reason?

My daily commute consists of 10 miles roundtrip, city driving
and I have been averaging about 20 miles pergallon. Not sure why,
have noticed this increase for the past couple of months, prior was
averging about 17.5 miles per gallon.Maybe car is more broken in,currently
have 13,000 miles on it(have had car for 18 months).

I just made an 1800 mile trip which included about 33% stop and go city and the rest highway miles at 80 mph plus. I got 24.3 mpg for the whole trip. For long stretches of highway driving I averaged 27.2 and it wasn't all flat driving.

What are your average speed in city driving? I've noticed quite a difference in MPG (or L/100 km in my model) when my average speed in a tank was 22km/hr (13.67 mph) vs a tank at 24 km/hr (14.91 mph). Idling drains up the gas real bad.

in pure city driving (chicagoland burbs) we get 16-17mpg.
On long expressway heavy trips (60-70mph) we get 24-25mpg. If you can keep it right at 65mph you get way better mileage then at the usually 70-80mph we all know we usually run.
On a combined tank of heavy highway and half city we get 20mpg.
So all in all the window stickers appear to be spot on.

Yea...thats the one (and only one) thats available.
So far...the air/woosh noise is different in 1st and 2nd gear in S mode (reason why i say S mode - so i can push the revs up higher, in automatic, u may not necessarily hear the difference because its not revving that high). Pushing 5k rpm + its now a REALLY SWEET WHINE/ZING...i noticed this right after installation. sweeet sound now.
I put 200 city miles on since installation...and it has hovered around 19mpg...that has not happened pre-K&N. Im not making any claims so far, cuz its too soon...but my city miles are usually in the 16-18 range. 18 being the highest point. so maybe its fair to say, 1mpg noticable thus far. Throttle tip in may be a tad better, noticed a bit more increased response from stop/go...like...its pulling a bit better off the line, either way 50 bucks well spent! S mode + flying thru 1st and 2nd gear makes it for me.

Mileage on my first day of ownership
I just picked up my RDX Tech Package yesterday and got 19.7 MPG average on my first 3/4 tank with some highway, some idling in the dealership and with family friends, and some city driving. Clearly the car did horribly for the first few minutes, but it was idling at the dealership during my walkthrough on the features. BTW, the car was jumping on the turbo boost a fair amount as I got used to the modulation of the throttle. I anticipate low to mid 20's based on this experience thus far. What a great car/suv!!!

Now I'm at 20.6 MPG on my second tank since I purchased the RDX. Admittedly 85% highway driving, but certainly better than I expected based on the gloom and doom I saw on this thread and others. I'm definitely staying off turbo boost when I can, although it's near impossible when you hit a hill on the highway. Given the performance level, AWD and the heft of this rig, I'm really happy with the mileage thus far.

I am still averaging around 19.5 MPG on mine. Just under 3k on it. It seems to be improving little by little as the car ages. Still, the MPG while not as great as I hoped, so far it is well within range and not the #1 reason why I bought my RDX. It has broken 20MPG on two tanks so far. compare that to the once in almost 17k miles for my wife's CX-7 and you can't complain. I am finding that the trip computer isn't the most accurate. It was reasonably spot on at 19.8 on the last tank, but I have had it be as much as a full MPG off. It seems to reas really gawdy MPG in the beginning of the tank that dissapears as the tank moves on. My trip computer read 26mpg on my last tip after the first 50 or so miles on the tank. Not a chance that was right!

Averaging just over 19 mpg, 80% city, 6300 miles. Clearly my RDX isn't setting any records, but I nearly didn't buy it after reading some of the fuel economy gloom and doom posts on this board.

I am at 10k miles and average according to computer is 20.5
I do almost all city driving. The milage also has gotten better over time. When I got the car I as at 19.

I am still on first tank, so far 180 miles on RDX. On highway of 60 miles 26 MPG (same as CR-V) and allover 18.5 MPG that includes city driving, couple of hours on/start mode at parking lot/garage for MID, Navigation and Bluetooth setup.

I just did a trip from Boston to the lower Cape with two kayaks and two mountain bikes on a hitch. Even with all the added weight I still average 20.9 gals with an avg. speed of 43 mph. I was impressed!

Our new-used '07 is giving me 23 between Denver and Colorado Springs, and around 17 in Denver. Although it's broken in (18k), this is our second tank of gas since buying it and probably am driving a bit heavy-footed due to it's being new to us. I miss the mileage of the '04 TSX we just traded but not the problems we'd had very recently.

RDX calculated 29 mpg, after I re-set trip B and drove 30 miles on Denver highways I-25/US 36 with a speed of 65-75mph by turn off Navi, AC and audio. I know 30 miles is too short to bench mark, but still I was surprised !!!!

2008 RDX w/Tech @ 1,950 miles and ~21 MPG averaging ~40 mph over two weeks/one tank. Upper 200 mile range per tank not "topping off", but running until <15 miles left on the computer.
Factoring in the comfort, toys, performance and I have no complaints!
Even with premium fuel and a fuel cleaner every tank I have noticed quite a bit of savings at the pump compared to my 2004 Honda Pilot. I used to rave at the fuel economy it provided. Sure it's a much larger vehicle, but the extra space was very rarely used by me.
Only disconcerting thing is a friend of mine claims 21 highway MPG in a 5.7L gas V-8 (fulltime 8 cylinder) 5 passenger pickup truck. That makes the RDX look like a real gas hog on the highway. I have my doubts about the accuracy of his claim.

Miserable Mileage
Help, 2008 RDX w/o Tech - ~ 4500 miles 75%-80% City Driving < 10 miles average per trip - Mileage "sucks" @ 13-15 mpg . Lease vehicle from California (does it have special emission controls?) now living in Colorado (4700 ft elevation).
This seems nuts for a 4 cyl vehicle even if I use the TurboCharger all the time which I don't. I've tried "hypermile-ing" minimal acceleration, less than posted speed limit & coasting to stops and at best it goes up to maybe 15.5 mpg.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - I'm truly very disappointed with vehicle at this time !

In order to see if it is out of whack you have to look at the average speed number not just miles traveled. If you are in bumper to bumper traffic with lots of starts and stops and rarely get over 20 mph then your milage will suck.
If you classify city driving as a few stop lights and a few wide open stretched with constant speed then the number goes up.

Mileage Matters
You are doing a ton of city mileage, that is the problem. Consumer Reports just tested the RDX at 13MPG in all city driving testing, so it sounds to me like your mileage is about right. My wife does around 100% city driving when she takes my RDX, and the trip computer says she gets around 14.5MPG....

Darmc96 - I see you also have a Mazda CX7 which is also a Turbo 4 cylinder (I think ). I had actually looked at this as an alternative. What kind of mileage do you get on it in comparison for the same type of driving? I traded out of my BMW X-3 ('04 2.5L V6) and though I didn't like its mileage either (15-17mpg) it frankly was better and the newer versions '06-08/09 are supposedly bigger engined & better mileage related.
I guess I just needed to express my feelings of frustration and see if others were experiencing the same! I don't expect 30mpg in town (I would have bought a Civic/Aveo/ Smartfo (?)) but at $ 45/half tank of gas, its a BIT of an IRRITATION every time I go to the gas station!

With you with your RDX, it is totally the city driving that kills it. The RDX needs to be on and off the boost to get its power. In the city, you will be on and off the boost a LOT causing the MPG to suffer more than a non-turbo engine. As the turbo provides more boost, it sucks up the fuel!

28,000 miles in my 2007 RDX Tech 18.9 average 80% hwy 20% (city). This is my normal everday commute.
When I cruise around in the city it prolly averages more like 15 if I did 100% of my drive.
Love the car still.

All car computers have some 'learning' they can do, and they adjust the fuel tables or timing based upon previous data the computer has received. Specifically in this case, I've seen cars where if you stick lower octane in them, the car will discover the lower octane from hearing the knock, and will pull the timing. Over an extended time, the car will adjust it's running fuel and timing tables, and will begin to assume that this is the constant case. So, after a while of scanning, you will not see any more knock, because it just presumes that this is the way it is always. So, in a really interesting way, you can teach the car to use the lower octane. Now, from what I can see, even though it is not learning to just assume this is happening, I don't see anything bad occurring in the car when you are just driving around, and up to about 80% throttle, which is the range that most of us are driving around in. It's only when you really are trying to extract all the power, flooring it, that the car seems to be bent out of shape, and retards the timing incredibly [like 15 degrees, which is a lot], and pulls down the boost by several psi.
I've been doing some more testing, and the other interesting item is the alcohol. Running with 10% alcohol ALWAYS gives better gas mileage [about 2miles per gallon]. Running with about 15-20% alcohol gives even better mileage [about another 2 miles per gallon]. The cooling effect of the alcohol must be improving the efficiency of the turbo.
So, my all time record now is with 50psi in the tires, between 15-20% alcohol, and hypermiling. I've managed 35 mpg on two tankfuls. Driving normally, I'm getting about 27mpg overall.
Really, this is more about testing different ideas and analyzing, I'm actually really happy with the car, even when it's getting 21-22mpg. I just thought it would be fun to test different concepts on a bigger vehicle.
I'd be interested to hear other reports from people running 89 and what they are averaging for their gas mileage, and see if it aligns with what I am seeing, mainly that overall gas mileage doesn't seem greatly affected if driven normally and not too aggressively.

Whats the point of owning a vehicle that has the power and handling of the RDX if you have no intention of utilizing it?
Hypermileing implies driving way below the speed limit, causing you to be inpede the flow of traffic ,causing a hazard to others. Also putting 50 PSI in your tires??????Any person with knowledge in mechanics will tell you that is a sure way to cause your vehicle to have a blow out eventually.
I hope you have fun enjoying your "35 mpg"-which is hard to believe.Because pretty soon you will cause someone to get hurt or killed.
Further- posters on here who say gas mileage is not an issue with the RDX should look at the fact that this thread has over 40,000 views and now is at some 12 pages long!

Update - After having the K&N in for about 1500 miles, i had aspike up high 20mpgs (i think the highest i quoted was around 29mpg...) This has leveled off signifigantly BUT, where my routine city avg for the stock air box kept the motor in the 16's mpg range, the K&N has kept me around 18mpg in the city. Thats pretty decent.
On the highway, there hasnt really been a change, however, the K&N has kept me routinely in the 22/23mpg MORE OFTEN than the stock box. Could be summer gas, could be a combo of summer gas/K&N or just K&N. Well see once the winter and cooler temps come.

2008 Honda Civic Mugen Si
We have 35000 miles on our RDX. We had the RDX for 2 years now and the overall mpg we got since new it's 21mpg. The mpg did improve a bit after we passed 15000 miles. And now its not that hard to average 24mpg on highways and it barely go down below 18mpg in the city. (I stayed with 35 cold psi for all 4 tires)
Long trips taken with the RDX so far:
Oklahoma to Los Angeles, up to San Fran/Bay Area, down to Vegas and back to OK
Oklahoma to Ft Jackson/South Carolina down to Orlando back to OK
Oklahoma to South Padre Island and back (twice)
So what is this K&N filter everyone is talking about? is it a CAI, SRI or just a drop in filter? Sorry I haven't been lingering around this forum for a few months now.

Here is some "doom and gloom" for ya: 13.1 mpg since the last refuel! Lifetime, 16.5. I'm at about 1500 miles. It started around 19, but recently dropped.
This is NYC driving: 1 mile to daughter's elementary school, 0.25 miles to PathMark, 0.5 miles to another grocery store, 1.5 miles to closest mall, 27 miles to the airport -- with at least 10 miles in stop-and-go at 5mph...
Does anyone here have the same driving pattern and can comment whether 13 mpg is normal under these circumstances?

Had a fluke 30.5 once on a 116mile trip out of the mtns with a half a ton of cargo and living beings aboard, but on a consistent basis we get about 24-26 which is 60% @ 55mph and 40% at 35mph...give or take. Weekend trips through the local canyons really getting after it still see 19-20. No complaints here!
Mike, thanks for the great input on the drop-in K&N filter. You just made my decision to get one much easier! Really don't know why I waited this long actually...everything I own and have owned in the past has or had a K&N filtration system in it of some fashion. Guess I'll be adding the RDX to that long list.

I just got my RDX a couple of weeks ago and according to the vehicle computer, I got 19.4 MPG on this tank, but when I divided the number of miles by the gallons of gas I put in the tank, I got 18.3. Either way, I'm pretty happy. I drove it very, very conservatively, so this tank, I'll drive it to have some fun and see how far it falls!!!
