turbo durability.

i swear i read somewhere (before joining the forum) that you guys discussed the merits of rdx's turbo engine and its durability. just wondering if anyhave had issues whatsoever with turbo reliability (dont mention lags as we all know it's miniscule).

does having the engine with turbo compromise the ever bullet proof acura/honda engine whatsoever? in the past turbos did have tendencies to break down, dunno if this still holds true, esp for our rdx's (i own one myself but unlike brake wear never read anything about turbo reliability weakness on the rdx).

if you could refer me to the posts, much appreciated. cant seem to find it anymore (maybe it's hidden on one of these threads as an subtopic).

I've been on this forum since July 2008 and do not recall reading any posts regarding the RDX turbo reliablity or problems. (Turbo lag is not a problem but rather engineering) I belive it's as rock solid in reliabilty as any Acura NA engine. If the turbo engine had problems we would have heard about it by now. It's been on the roads since 2006 as a 2007 model.

The turbo makes it's weird wooshes and whirls noises but is a trooper reliability wise.

Has anyone had any turbo services done such as, rebuilt, waste-gate, gaskets etc.? If so what milage?

I asked a sales person once when did I need to get the turbo rebuilt he looked at me like I was crazy, but he also didn't know what I was talking about, lol. It is expected when you own a turbo, but when do we have to do it for the RDX?

good to hear about this. researched this prior to my purchase this yr. now w/VW turbo it might be diff case. but my subjective thought: acura = engine expertise/longetivity even if turbo rdx only around '07. cant say that for VW per what ive read.

Do any of you guys "cool" off the engine/turbo before shutting the engine off? i.e. Turbo timer?

In short: the answer is no...

But check it out for yourself, in this short thread, cwepruk has some insightful information that may answer your question
https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-rdx-2007-2012-147/turbo-timer-necessarily-694101/

Another, longer thread that may give a little more detail but you have to sift through the arguments is:
https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-rdx-2007-2012-147/turbo-cool-down-680386/

Hope that helps

Nope, Honda took no risks when building the turbo engine, made it run really rich so it'd never knock. This of course meant piss poor fuel economy.

Turbos used to "burn out" back in the day. Keeping them cool, winding them down after driving all that stuff. But I dont know if thats still the case. I beleive modern engineering has solved those issues.

Best turbo vehicle ever...Buick Grand National. You line up a row of Porsches at me, Ill take a cherry Buick GN over any of them. That car SCREAMED "badass."

I found this from Acuranews.com, quote

"RDX's turbocharger is positioned to the rear of the engine, close to the exhaust ports for maximum transfer of the hot, high velocity exhaust gasses. Water passages in the aluminum exhaust manifold help keep the temperature within the exhaust system at optimum levels for both the turbocharger and catalytic converter. When the engine is shut off, coolant continues to circulate within the turbo housing due to thermal convection, helping prevent long-term heat-related damage to the turbocharger bearings."
