stupid key question

This is silly, but I like to have my keys together. ... a key to RDX, Home, out-laws, parent's, office keys, old car and truck...you know what I mean. Not a crazy number of keys, but it's slieghtly hefty. Somewhere I read not to attatch keys to the key ring as it might screw with the chip in the key. But it came with a nice inviting ring hanging from it...all naked...could I dive in and attatch keys?

try it if your car starts stalling, not starting, studdering or anything else try takeing the ones with the computer chips in them off.

Thanks. none of the other keys have chips in them. I thought the problem was the weight from the keys dangling around while in the ignition. I wasn't sure if that was what messed with the chip. If it's just an issue with oither chips, then I'm loading her up!

The probability of a problem I suspect is very low. Like with credit cards, there is some chance they can demagnetize each other if in direct contact.... the keys in contrast are shielded (as are credit cards by wallet "slits") so I think to have a problem the keys would have to both be extended and you would have to touch them in just the right way...... again, low probability.

The problem is just other immobilizer chips in the vicinity not weight so it sounds like you are good to go!

Although I agree that this was the warning being referred to, having too many keys hanging off the end of your ignition key does have potential to damage the ignition cylinder.

I keep all of my keys connected via a small carabiner and just remove my car key when it use. The rest fit in that handy little slot by the radio. When I leave the car, the car key joins the ring and back into my pocket.

Another option is to use one of those quick-release keyring where you can disconnect a portion of it. Trying to find a picture to describe what I mean, but can't find one just now...

yup its the immobilizer it would notice the other key trying to communicate to the ignition and the ignition would think that the wrong key. so it tries to shut the car down. it usually only happens with other honda acura keys.

alot of people that have 2 different honda acura keys have issues. how far away the other key is away from the ignition could be the difference. i havent really heard of any other companies key. as far as i know it is when there is another honda acura key. but i could be wrong.

Skeandhu is right -- that is the real issue with weight -- damaging the lock cylinder. I hear people call into Car Talk with this problem all the time, and usually they do have a bunch of keys. Mostly happens to older cars that have been around long enough to incur the damage over time.

I love using the quick-release key rings. I have one ring of house/office/etc keys with a male connector. Each of our three car keys has a female connector. So I can easily clip the house keys onto whichever car keys I am using at the time. Of course, for this to be effective, you can't be a knucklehead like me and forget the house keys from time to time....

Yea, that's it! I like the idea of hanging the keys from the removeable ring. I've seen those in velcro, but I like the metal one. I'll look into that. I've been leaving my keys in the little space next to the lighter too, but inevidably, end up going back to the car later to get 'em.
Thanks all!

A bit off topic, but my minor complaint is RDX's stiffer suspension combined with the extended lever arm from the switch key makes rest of my keys jangle more than I'm used to when driving over a bumpy road. Small price to pay for the excellent handling.
