Is the starter on car undersized?

Might be a little premature, but I noticed that when starting the car their is not much power behind the starter motor. I am concerned that in the winter time this might be an issue. Live in Dutchess County, NY which can have its share of 30 degree days. Anyone else notice this issue?

Mine certainly starts quickly and easily enough. What makes you think there's not enough power?

My guess is its the same starter off a TSX/RSX, since those engines have higher compression ratios this starter should be plenty for this engine.

Not quite sure yet...seems fine to me. Up here in Calgary we have our fair share of -30 (I'm assuming you're talking about farenheit) weather so I'm interested to see how it holds up at that point and if turbo whine on startup is excessive.

Does Honda/Acura use all metal starters? I know toyota uses plastic planetary gears(rebuilt one before), and the starters as a whole tend to be weak.

I live in CT, mine really groaned a couple mornings ago. It was only in the 30s, parked in an unheated garage. Its an odd noise to explain, sounds like the starter needs a bit more power to get the crank turning fast enough. It'll get in the teens and sometime single digits here, can only wait and see..

Very interesting I have started the car in the high 30's here in NY and have not experienced the same as of yet, but now I'll keep an ear out.

If the weather is effecting it its more likely the battery. If you live somewhere really cold you may consider a battery warmer and/or block heater.

Say like Newton, MA or any North-Eastern state for that matter?

I agree with neeteez..mine sounds "weak" for a starter., even in warm weather. For a new vehicle, it shouldn't be the temperature. We'll see here soon. There is a blizzard predicted for tomorrow.
Also want to see how the X does in snow!

It may be a little weaker, but shouldn't be a problem. I have an RSX-S and back in 2003, I noticed the same issue. A lot of RSX guys also mentioned it. It may just be a current Honda thing. In really cold weather, it does take 1 second or so longer to crank, but it has never not started in 3.5 years. I live in Chicago which gets really cold too. I find that if you turn the key to the position right before cranking, it powers up all the electricals and pumps first... then crank it. It won't hesitate at all.

In my truck I need to let the fuel rail pressurize for a good 3-5 seconds before it will turn over... The problem is unlikely to be the starter motor itself...

Yeah, but your truck is different, its not that the starter on it is too weak, but the fact the the you have to pressurized the lines, and the engine turns over and over just fine. Nothing like what they are saying about there starters on the RDX. But it could be something one of you guys should try.

Thanks for the reply, but I never said it didn't start fairly fast. It just cranks over slowly. Has started every time so far. If it gets to be a problem, I'll take it back to the dealer to have it fixed under warranty!
