Snow Tires & Rims purchase in GTA

I am thinking of getting snow tires for the RDX (I know it is kind of late ). For those who have got the snow tires or planning to get a set as well, where are best places to get them in Toronto ? Is Wheels Direct (at Sheppard and McCowan) good ? I am thinking to get a smaller size than 18"(maybe 16" or 17"). By the way, I saw a FX-45 the other day with a set of 17" snow tires, looks pretty good.

Not sure if Wheels Direct sell/install the tire pressure sensors. If so, anyone knows how much ? or should I just disable the TPMS while using snow tires ?

I priced out a set of snow tires and rims from the local dealer in Edmonton (Canada for you American guys). They wanted $2500 for 18" Toyos with a set of Acura Rims. It seemed like a lot and I don't think I need them yet.

My neighbour had a good experience ordering rims and tires for his Volvo S60 AWD from Tire Rack. They shipped it across the border to the Volvo dealer and he was able to get them without duty charges as the tires were manufactured in the U.S.

They're terrific. I've had a couple sets of them, and I've been very impressed.

Regarding Wheels Direct, I'd recommend somewhere else. Customer service is pretty poor. Try tire depot, or steelcase wheel and tire in Markham.

Sensors

For those who have installed the snow tires, where did you get the sensors ? I am wondering where I can get them in Toronto other than dealers.

Is it ok to leave the TPMS light on all time if I don't install the sensors ?

I wouldn't bother with the sensors. I've managed to keep inflation levels fine on the cars I've owned over the last two decades, so I don't see the need in spending the extra money for another set. YMMV.

When you end up buying, let us know what you bought and where. I need to get a set of winters and rims also.

Rims

I am wondering whether MDX rims or other Acura rims would fit the RDX ?

I had them on my A4 quattro (just before I got my RDX) and they were great. In the winter, it was as if the car was on rails!

Good to hear that I guess I would not consider the Coopers ones which is $150 cheaper for the whole set.

By the way, did anyone install the winter tires without putting on the sensors ? Any issues ?

no issues without sensor, I have my set for the whole winter.

only draw back is you can't be able to turn off vsa and the tpms light is always on

I have a set of toyo open country G02+, it's prefect so far, I get them from wheels direct, since they offer me the best price, I agree the service is close to no serivce but I don't need to be there often, so who care.

by the way I am in Toronto as well

Thanks for the info. What size of rims did you get ? Do you mind telling me how much did they charge you for the package ? (you can PM if you want to) Thanks

I go for 16" to save money, and I get ikon 13 as the rims size of tire is 205/75/16 the price is $1580 tax in

I am thinking to get the 16" too, and it will save money and be less stiff as well

How do you like it so far ? Did they recommend 205/75/16 to you ? I think they said 225/70/16 for me. I guess not much difference, right ?

IkON 13 is gun metal, right ? Is it more expensive ?

both size have the same over all height, depand what you want.

I go for 75 series because of the softer ride and 205 for deep snow and gas millage. Since I don't plan to drive fast in winter anyways.

oh and gun metal don't cost more, all ikon rims is around the same price anyway but keep in mind not all 16" fit

Wow. I wasn't aware of that. That's a pretty big drawback, actually. There's been a couple times that I needed to disable the vsa to get unstuck.

I opted to go with Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3 on the OEM rims. They cost $235.00 ea and will buy new rims for summer usage. I am really not that keen on the OEM rims, maybe if they had been chrome but would rather have something in the summer that is different from the stock rims.

Might cost a bit more in the long run but I will be happier this way myself. Would have gone for the Michelin X-ice but they weren't in stock at the time in the OEM size.

Sensors

I am looking at the sensors from this articles http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=44

They look like very small and easy to install on the wheels. Can we uninstall them from original rims and put them on snow tires' rims in winter , and putting them back on original rims in summer instead of buying another set of sensors ?

Neither was I - IMO, I think this would make people rethink the idea.

On my TL this winter, there were several times I had to turn VSA off to get my TL moving on slick/snow covered surfaces.

I try to purchase the tpms sensor so I can install it on my after market rims, but I talk to the guy work in acura dealer, the acura tpms sensor is a little bigger that others and may need to mod a little bit in order to fit, and the sensor is not returnable even when you install it at dealer.

If someone able to install it, let me know, I am pretty sure I will install it

Tpms

You are right. The light was on all the sudden while I was on freeway. It was not on early this morning, I was even trying to turn off the VSA, and I could.

By the way, I did take a look of those original rims, I didn't see any device on them at all. Where do they put those sensors ? I thought they are something clipped on the air valve.

They are part of the valve stem inside the tire. they cost about $25/each for the OEM TPMS sensor assembly.

Why can't you turn off VSA? The VSA system and the TPMS system have nothing to do with each other. Are you sure you are trying to turn the VSA off correctly? You have to press and hold the VSA OFF button in until it shuts off.

Oh I see what you are saying I think. When you say inside the rim, you mean like the area where the brake rotors are inside the rim? Where I thought you meant inside the rim as in inside the tire in the rim.

The TPMS sensor is part of the valve stem or rather the valve stem is part of the TPMS sensor. the sensor part being located inside the tire at the base of the valve stem. So there is no way to see the sensor while the tire is mounted.

check page 315 in owner manual, you will know why you are not able to turn vsa off.

Hmmm, I guess Acura makes the assumption that if it can't read the TPMS that you have the spare tire on. This would be a very compelling reason to always have TPMS sensors so that you can turn VSA off in deep snow ir mud even though hopefully you wouldn't need to turn it off if the snow tires are good enough.
