Shocking discovery with RDX.....
Hello all:
I recently purchased a RDX Tech package. Drove it home from dealership Thursday night. Left it in garage mostly over weekend because it was raining and didn't want to dirty the car just yet......I babied it home and will continue until I reach 600 miles....
Sunday after a drive to the store I backed the RDX in my garage next to my RL. Got out and immediately smelled what smelled like "oil on the exhust pipe". The smell you get when the dealership changes the oil and gets it on the exhust pipe right......wrong:
When I laid under neath the engine bay I discovered OIL ozzing out under the engine where it meets the transmission. I wiped it clean took another spin and sure enough oil present again......KEEP IN MIND I DON'T DO WOT! So I call my sevice rep I've used for years with my local Acura dealership. He told me he has already seen the same thing last week.
PLEASE check your underside of the engine and make sure you don't have the same issue.......
There is a "black" plate with two bolts. That is where the oils is coming from. When you remove it you see the tourque converter. They think they are putting something wrong at the factory thus causing this.
Please let us know if your chip on you shoulders is stopping you from sharing this early concern of mine......
I have a 2006 TL loaner. What a sweet ride also.....I'm looking to trade my 05 MDX for a 2007 MDX "Sport" model loaded......has anyone driven that sucker ? OMG is all I can say.....

I didn't mean to be sarcastic but I know we are "PROUD" of our Acura's and sometimes folks don't share.
So has anyone heard of this before ? What are some other issues shared? Or what do I search on...

There was NO oil on my garage floor. It is not a LEAK per say but ozzing and remains on the engine in the area I described.
I'm 46 too ! I thought I was the only "ole fart" buying this vehicle.....

The only thing keeping me from buying an MDX over the RDX is the additional $10,000+. The '07 MDX is phenomenal and I may still end up with it (to go with the '04 MDX in the garage).

Welcome to the "ole fart' club. By the way, I am also ex-Californian.
At any rate, thanks for the heads up and I will definitely take a closer look tonight.

look closely where the engine meets the tranny. You will see a black plate 3 inches by 4 inches with two small bolts. That is where the culprit is.....I'll let you guys know as soon as my dealership call me with the results......
1:06 p.m. PST....
P.S.
Age doesn't matter.....as long as the "matter" doesn't age.........

I don't think its an RDX vs. MDX issue, rather just a new model issue. We may check out the new MDX based on the additional space my mom now thinks she may need. The 8K we would likely pay over the RDX may make that impossible, but we'll see.
I'm sure you will let us know all you figure out about the problem.

Dealership just called. They cleaned out the area behind that black plate that allows seeing the tourgue convertor. They cleaned it out and ran the engine for an hour with NO signs of oil seepage.....what a relief ! I'd still check your undercarriage!

I would guess that this problem is limited to a particular batch of RDXs if it is an improper part being installed, or something that is being installed incorrectly. Plus the fact that your dealer has seen two of the problem. The problem can probably be isolated to a range of VIN numbers. What are the last 5 of your VIN, fabvsix?
I just checked mine, and there is an oily look to it, but I touched it, and got no oily residue on my fingers. Looks like there was some oil there at one time, but it isn't there anymore. Doesn't that make sense? I don't know how you had oil leak from there and get to your exhaust though. The exhaust is a little bit away from that black plate. If it spread from there to the exhaust, I would think it would have dripped, but you said it didn't drip. I have no drips in my garage either. It almost looks like they lubed something inside the plate from the factory and it naturally seeped out and stopped. There's definitely nothing there for me to clean off, and I never had any burning smell like you described.

oh! & by the way, you aren't the only old fart in here! I got ya by 6 years!!
( & I absolutely LOVE, LOVE my RDX!) Way more than even my MDX's of past years.
It is quite possible it is something from assembly that made its way out. If it is not continuing to leak, and its holding oil, than I doubt you had a leak in the first place.
For all our sakes I hope you didn't.
Thanks for the heads up,
Mike

German vs. American build doesn't make the difference it is hyped up to... I don't think anyones Acuras have actually had problems due to location of assembly... Engineering mistakes(I.E, hondamatics) sure, but besides that, nothing I've heard off correlates to the place of assembly. Even rattles are due to fitment issues unrelated to factory workers.
