Service Due Soon: Too early?

members, just wondering what's your thoughts on changing oil /tire rotation at 15% oil life? ive read here that it may be too early since the MID is "conservative" in asking you for A1 service.

i just got my "A1 service due soon" reminder tonight and am leaving for a 2 wk vacation next weekend. my 8 month old rdx has 4500+ miles on it so far and havent had it's first oil change since i bought it.

the question: do i have to change it within this week or will oil further degrade after i come back from my trip (eg. even if i dont use it)? how "sensitive" is the turbo engine anyway on this aspect? (8 mos tells me to just to change it ASAP) - methinks i can go either way but maybe there's some technical advantages of doing it earlier or later.

thanks

If your two week vacation includes driving the RDX, change oil now. This description comes from the RL because I happened to have it on my clipboard, but you get the point, the MID takes a series of parameters into mind when counting down. Remember to get Mobil 1 oil.

MAINTENANCE MINDER SYSTEM
To eliminate unnecessary service stops while ensuring that the vehicle is properly maintained, the RL has a Maintenance Minder System that automatically monitors the vehicle's operating condition. When maintenance is required, the driver is alerted via a message on the Multi-information display.

The system monitors operating conditions such as oil and coolant temperature and engine speed to determine the proper service intervals. Depending on the operating conditions, oil change intervals can be extended to a maximum of 10,000 miles, potentially sparing the owner considerable money and inconvenience over the life of the car. The owner-resettable system monitors all normal service parts and systems, including oil and filter, tire rotation, air-cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, spark plugs, timing belt, coolant, brake pads and more. To prevent driver distraction, maintenance alerts are presented when the ignition is first turned on, not while driving.

'to prevent driver distraction' LOL - the MID is the most distracting thing in the car when u need service i want to rip it out of the dash.

You don't have to change it at 15%, just a warning (due soon). I change my oill every 5K. If by the time you return from your trip your RDX is going to be over 5K, do it now. if not you can wait, and just deal with that pesky orange message your entire trip.

u should be completely fine @ 15% unless u plan on racking up mega miles. Change it when you are back.

LOL, my initial reminder for service due soon actually occured as i was in the freeway - i kinda expected it but it was a bit annoying to fiddle with the menu while driving at such speeds (i always set it to the temp mode as it seems the most useful for me - shld have put in the temp i/o turbo meter and the turbo meter as part of the options instead).

So RDX usually reminder for oil change every 5000 miles? Normally full synthetic oil can last 15000 miles?

That would be for non-turbo engines I believe, besides 15000 miles for an oil change? why wait so long?

+1 on the turbo engines it seems (eg 5k)-- ive read all posters not >8000 miles here for sure on the rdx (some not even 4k actually). mine came up at 4500+ (am driving more "spirited" the last day or two to see if this accelerates the process LOL) and i doubt anyone with an rdx managed to go over 10k (i drive 70% hwy, 15% suburban roads, 15% city)

Maybe the reason is it has turbo. My bmw usually 15000 mile with synthetic. Non synthetic oil can last 5000 miles.

You have used 85% of your oil life at 4500 miles. At that rate, the monitor should reach 0% remaining at 5294 miles. (4500/0.85=5294).

So you have about 794 miles to go (if you can put up with the light). It wiil likely still be reading 5% or so, several weeks after the vacation.

If you want to get full service from the oil run it down to 0% remaining. Even if you go past 0% nothing explodes . It simply starts nagging with a flashing yellow negative number. (Obviously, don't put it off beyond that.)

What makes this Turbo engine so different than the VW/Audi 1.8T and 2.0T (or even the 2.7T) engines? Those do not require synthetic (although plenty of people use it) and they all have longer oil change intervals that the RDX. Is Honda/Acura just being conservative?

Cost

Just received the same A1 Message as well. How much does the dealer charge and what goes into the A1 5k Service?

I think Acura is conservative. On the bottle of Synthetic oil usually say: "guaranteed for 15000 miles". Turbo shouldn't be so short for oil change.

If your BMW is covered under the "free maintenance" program than it's service schedule is determined more by what is good for BMW's financial statement than what is good for your car.

No, you can see on the bottle of a lot of Synthetic oil say "guaranteed for 15000 miles".

As soon as the oil company is the company engineering and manufacturing my engine and providing the warranty, I'll go with what they say. Until then, I'll stick with what the engine builder says.

I have synthetic oil and the dratted reminder/alert/warning is on after <2000 miles but 4 months. How can I turn it off or changed it to the correct timing?

After about one week and few miles driven, it said 90% then quickly 80%.

I found the answer

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=681045

Wonderful. EASY. Exactly the info I needed. My car now shows 100%.

Assuming the ignition is on,

Press the Select/Reset knob repeatedly until the engine oil life is displayed.

Press and hold the Select/Reset knob for about 10 seconds. The engine oil life and the maintenance item code(s) will blink.

Press the Select/Reset knob for another 5 seconds. The maintenance item code(s) will disappear, and the engine oil life will reset to ‘‘100.’’
(I would have deleted the previous post, but was prevented from doing so cuz time maxed out)
