Roof Rack
Hello,
I just bought a 2008 RDX - LOVE IT! Didn't get a roof rack and now i'm regretting it. Anyone have a roof rack?
Do you like it? Is it worth the $596 the dealer is qouting me?
thanks,
Amanda

Congrats on your new car! You can get the part online:
http://motors.shop.ebay.com/merchant/openroadacuraparts
http://www.acurapartssuperstore.com
for about $310 and either install it yourself or have it installed at your local auto body shop for less than an hour in labor.

NO, I don't think that you will regret it at all.....If you don't mind the "naked" look of not having the rack, don't get it. I have it on my car, and if it wasn't for my wife it would be taken down, We don't use it and don't anticipate using it. Unless we are forced to get a travel box thingy (Kids in the future??) I don't see the need for it.
Have you ever used a roof rack before? In an SUV anyways? I had a roof rack on my Saab that I used for my bikes, I tried to use it on my RDX and I didn't like it. It is hard to put up a bike on a car this tall, I don't want to risk dropping the bike on the roof either.
That price seems excessive too.

The rack was on when I both my '08. I like the look, but will never use it. I took off the crossbars. They weigh a ton and cut gas mileage. If you DIY you have to cut the mouldings on the roof. Easy if you have the tools and know how. I would go with a local auto body shop for the work. You'll save about $200.
If you need a roof rack for either the Acura rails or third party then I suggest looking for a good Internet price and make the dealer match it.
If you dont need the rack I would suggest skipping it as the rack just decreases the mpg.
I personally do not think it adds a whole lot to the looks but that is highly subjective. I also dont think it is worth the money just for the looks, but again just my

Thanks so much for your feedback and suggestions. I really don't need the roof rack, i just think it looks cool! But, it is pretty pricey if I don't anticipate using it really. Maybe I'll put it on my christmas wish list and cross my fingers!
Thanks again!

BTW I didnt get the roof rack coz they will cut a hole on my rdx roof!!!
You don't have to cut holes for the OEM roof rack..you need to chop the plastic cap (that covers the rails), but that's about it....go to the DIY section, you'll see
I think the roof rack is well worth it. However, I use it all the time. I have kayaks, cargo, and other stuff. Since the cargo space is limited inside it's nice to have the roof rack for extra utility in case you need it. For me it's well worth the price. Obviously if people dont' need it they're going to say it's not worth it and vice versa.
I'm also looking to get the roof rack and DIY.
I dont know if I'm sold on the front underbody bumper. First you have to take the front of the car apart, including disassembling the foglight housings. When you look at the new bumper, it looks like only small side pieces around the fogs are different from the look of the original lower bumper. Why they didnt just make it double faced tape on small add on pieces, like the body side moulding is.

I just bought the roof rack and installed it myself. See my post in the DIY forum.
It took about 3 hours as I had to mess with the bolts to get them to align correctly to the rails. Other than that, it wasnt that hard. You do need some experience in DIY projects tho. Peeling the moulding and cutting it wasnt that hard, just a bit of work.
I'm not regretting it at all now. I saved a boat load of moeny. The previous post was right, they sell on line for around $300 plus shipping. I paid $260 thru a FL Acura dealer off eBay. Price included the shipping plus a special 10% off coupon from eBay!
The local dealer wanted $410 for the rack, plus $33 tax, plus $210 installation. $653 total...ouch.
