Angry Rear-Ended...Ouch (pics included)

So, I just got rear-ended this Friday night. The RDX held up like a champ. The guy hit me about 20 mph in a pickup truck, and I came away with minimal damage - bumper is screwed and hatch got punched it. Otherwise, car was/is driveable, so no complaints. Now just to get it fixed!

Pics below:

All the damage is behind the bumper, so how much $$$ is it going to cost?

Thanks for the support guys!

Estimate from insurance says ~$1400. We will see what the body shop says - need to make sure it is quality work.

$1400 seems about right to me. Assuming that it is all cosmetic and that he didn't hit you hard enough to bend anything up underneath.

Looks like lower tailgate, bumper cover, all the emblems on the lower tailgate, maybe a right tail light. The lower tailgate comes painted so the only part that needs paint is the bumper cover. I hope it matches good after its all done and make sure everything lines up to your satisfaction.

$1400 seems a bit low, once you factor in at 20MPH there will be damage behind the bumper.

Haha, in everyone's defense, it had been raining all week (aka what contributed to the accident). I usually keep that nighthawk black gleaming!

That is exactly what the appraiser quoted for. He is of course taking the el cheapo route and assuming no damage behind the panels to keep the estimate at minimum. If they find more, they can obviously bill the other guy more.

I do hope as well that the body work is satisfactory - I am a tough customer on things like that, so it should be. The dealer I bought from has a DuPont certified paint shop so I think it ought to work out. *fingers crossed* I will take after pics as soon as I get the car back.

Don't wait for them to bill the other guy more, Get total ratio of damage, and get the full LUMP SUM OF IT.
You don't want to pay anything out of your pocket, when it's the other guy's fault.
Give or take, I say it's around 2500-3000 in damage.

I'm not sure what you are basing your 2500-3000 dollar estimate on. The parts are under $800. And the bumper underneath is under $200 if that has any issues. The paint for nbp is standard paint and clear coat. Labor is a question mark but most shops do it for the rates and times the insurance companies estimate.

I don't think a TSX or a TL would look as nice in a rear end collision...=D

i am also interested in the repair costs as Acura advertises that the back hatch is plastic and should be cheaper to repair if damaged.

I am not comparing the TSX to the RDX In any way I know they’re similar designs, but make sure you do a thorough inspection of your vehicle check all the body lines on the rest of the car. My TSX was hit at rolling speed and it shifted my rear body lines, and door gaps significantly.

Yeah, it looks like it might just be a panel that pops off - I am sure it took less damage this way.

Amazing with a PU truck hitting you at 20 MPH there is not more damage. The RDX is built like a small tank.

Glad you are ok and the RDX looks good, considering. I was rear ended last fall in 04 TSX (I was stopped at a red light and hit from behind by other car going 30 mph) - serious frame damage and I had 3 herniated discs and nerve damage in my neck. I had surgery on my neck; TSX not so lucky. Some advice - make sure your body shop uses OEM parts and paint. Replaced TSX with 08 RDX - very happy.

sorry to bring up an old thread but am just noticing this too - so is the tailgate completely "plastic"? a big chunk of the rdx seems "plastic" ranging from the bumpers, lower parts near the doors, tailgates. as well, the fenders (front driver, front passenger, rear passenger, rear driver) seem to be "modular" pieces (eg. 4 pieces). am i imagining this or is it really resin based?

after further research, yes, lower part of the tailgate is made of polyurethane material. supposedly to make it cheaper for replacement parts should it get damaged. other portions of the body are made of the same material too. fenders are still same ol material - i would have preferred the fender outline (eg near the wheel/tires) be protected with polyurethane similar to how honda did it with the cr-v. dont get me wrong, i love the rdx but as the months go by, and as per what i read in another thread here in the rdx forum, it does seem that the cr-v has better build quality.
