Talking New RDX Owner!

Hello All!

I recently purchased a 2007 RDX Tech (Alabaster Silver/Ebony) from an Acura dealership in Ann Arbor and drove it back to Atlanta. The car now has 99K miles on the odometer and was clearly babied by the previous owner.

The Acura service department replaced the following before selling it to me:
  • Oil and filter
  • Starter
  • Heat shield
  • Engine and cabin air filters
  • Spark plugs
  • Drive belt
Things I plan to change/fix:
  • OEM all-season floor mats
  • Painted pinstripe removal
  • Timing chain cover leak (quoted $500 at an independent shop)
  • Driver door main speaker replacement
  • 100K mile service
  • Rear parcel shelf (it was missing)
Overall I really like the RDX. It feels surprisingly modern for an 11 year-old vehicle. Hoping it will last me 3-4 years.

With the plugs and drive belt replaced, your 100k service is mostly done already. At that age and mileage, I highly recommend changing coolant, transmission / differential, power steering and brake fluids if there is no record of them being done yet. The MID doesn't prompt for all of these, so it's easy to let some fluid changes slip by if you're relying only on the A1, B2, etc codes. A good independent Honda shop should be able to do all of those fluid changes for 300 or less OTD.

I also recently purchased a 2010 RDX a few months ago. I have been browsing the threads for a while and I never registered to be a member until today. Thanks to everyone who has posted their progress and the work involved. It has made my time reading very informative. I have added a k&n intake and flashpro within a week of buying the RDX I also added a turbosmart BOV but removed it after hearing the sound the k&n made by itself. Then winter came I had to buy my kids gifts for Xmas and the parts stopped flowing. But I'm starting to itch now and I added a push button start passive keyless entry and remote start yesterday. That was the most complicated job I have done to date by myself. But the car feels like I've moved up 5 years as far as convenience is concerned. But now that is over with I am going to move on to a little more power. What would be the next most logical step in your opinions?

I have only kn intake and flashpro. Thanks. I am located in southeast pa in Phila burbs. Is there a reputable shop in my area that I could visit and get recommendations?

I really liked my ETS intercooler. It feels a lot cooler to the touch in the middle of summer in NM and I feel an extra hp/tq boost with the butt dyno in winter when the temps get below 40 degrees. I also had a slight increase in mpgs with the intercooler.

RV6 catless down pipe & mid pipe as well as an ATLP cat back exhaust for sound with performance!

I added the Eibach lowering springs last year which lowered it about an inch. I forget the way it used to drive stock, but really enjoy the handling of it, even if only FWD. I was going to do the ATLP exhaust just for the round tips (2011 model), but then Christmas came and for $900, it seemed too much for just chrome tips (blame my GF). Now the 2019 model brings back the round exhaust tips. So probably in three years or so, it will be time to move up if the RDX is a great improvement over the 2011 model. It should be, and better be.

Why coolant, transmission / differential, power steering and brake fluids are important to change?

I have Acura Rdx 2007 and recently changed the serpentine and spark plugs.

Making sure - are you asking me why those fluids are important to change? If so, *all* fluids are important to change at their recommended intervals. Fluids degrade, get dirty, evaporate, etc. Some faster than others depending on the fluid and the system.

-- Coolant degrades and becomes acidic over time - it can literally eat a hole in your radiator if you don't stay on top of it.

-- Power steering fluid will get increasingly viscous as it gets dirty - ignore it long enough and you'll get that nasty power steering pump whine as your steering wheel slowly becomes harder to turn. Keep ignoring it and your pump will eventually give out.

-- Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the atmosphere - over time you can get water mixed with your brake fluid. Say that water turns to steam due to heat from the braking system. Liquid doesn't compress, but air does. You can lose braking power when you need it most if some of the fluid in your system suddenly decides to become air.

Your local mechanic can help you establish good service intervals depending on your driving style - I personally will change P/S, coolant and brake fluid every 2-3 years (for me, that's about 50k miles). If you drive less, I would still say do it at least every 3 years tops - but just my opinion. Transmission and differential fluid should be flagged my the MID codes, so stick to that unless your (trusted) mechanic says otherwise. Maintenance is pretty cheap on this car, so there is no reason to put it off. Skip on certain items, and even the most reliable cars will leave you stranded.

2018 will likely be softer than the TLX, but not bouncy. In the end it's still a "car" platform, and will ride more like a car than a body-on-frame SUV like the Forerunner. If you have a 6-cyl TLX, the mpg hit isn't too bad when moving to a 2G RDX. 4-cyl TLX to 6-cyl RDX is another story, but even so you're looking at maybe 20% less mileage...if you don't drive too much, no big deal. Definitely go drive one if you're on the fence. If you have time, wait for the 2019 and drive on of those as well. There will likely be a big difference between the two, and getting some seat time in both back-to-back will help you decide. And once the 2019's hit, I imagine some good deals will become available for what's left of 2018.
