My RDX MPG Log

I'm going to use this forum as a place to keep track of my MPG as I own the RDX. I'm sure others will find this useful as well. I am only using Shell 93oct V-Power (unless I have no other choice).

The first log is actually the first tank of gas run through the car (I'm not sure what kind of gas they put in it, nor exactly how much gas they put in either.)

6/21/09 (stock air filter)
295.7 Miles---Put in 16 gal. (65%HW/35%City)
Actual MPG 18.5
RDX Trip Computer MPG 20.7

my advice...try not to wrap yourself up in the MPG thing and enjoy the car for what it is...pay more attention to the drive and less attention to the trip computer

There is nothing wrong with tracking what your car is doing and how much money you are spending on it....I am tracking both my cars.....RDX and 9-5 Aero... BTW, bgillette, I befriended you.....

I just think it is fun to keep track of stuff like that.

I'm not going to drive the car any differently than I normally would. I mean what fun is owning the TURBO if you never use the turbo and only worry about MPG!

I'll drop my data in here for interested RDXers and for future people who are looking at MPG of the RDX.

wrestrepo thanks for that link. I liked the site enough to join...It really does all the calculation for you and keeps track...I liked that!

im not gettin sensitive about it...i could care less, frankly there are things that need to be accepted in life, filling up at least 1x a week is one of them hahha whether i roll +20 or +30 over what i expect, or -50 because i hammered the car...who cares

I hope the K&N filter is here by Wednesday...I'm sure that will help by at least 1-2mpg overall as it did in my TL!

6/27/09 (K&N air filter)
167.7 Miles---Put in 8.626 Gallons. (65%HW/35%City)
Actual MPG 19.4
RDX Trip Computer MPG 20.8

(I had a half tank left but was going to drive a lot so I just topped it off before our trip hence only an 8.626 gallon fill up.)

Fuelie.com is interesting but it has one critical flaw. Many of the posters are unaware that their model might be available with as many as 3 different engines and with FWD or AWD.

The clueless ones don't indicate their engine or drivedrain type which renders their data vague and mostly useless.

True...but good news for RDX owners is that we don't have to worry about any of that. So RDX data should be in theory spot on and very useful!

Nice! I was noting my MPG in MS Money, but Fuelly.com is way more convenient.

Just got back from a road trip from Brooklyn, NY to Myrtle Beach, SC. On a single tank the best I got was just over 400 miles on the tank (Total trip door to door was about 690 miles each way), but was running on fumes once I broke 400 miles on the trip (17-20 miles to empty at that point), and overall tank average was 25.0-25.3mpg. It was all highway, and at speeds of about 60-80mph, but I spent about 3 hours in stop and go traffic (Damn holiday weekend!) For the most part I averaged 24-25mpg at those speeds.
BUT FWIW, when my wife uses it during a typical week at home, which is 99% city driving, the RDX is an absolute PIG, getting only 12-13mpg and barely breaking 200 miles when the fuel is low and needs to be refueled.

Those are great numbers.....I can't believe that you went 400 miles, you must have been REALLY running on fumes...and I also can't believe that you got 25mpgs......awesome mileage.....I have never gotten over 24 instant, and never over 23 overall....

a few trips to NH i pulled out 400 miles from a tank, it is doable, but seems to happen sporadically. last few trips for summer vacations 3 ppl + luggage and was avging 24 routine. The K&N filter has contiually gotten 23-24 on the highway, almost regardless of how many passengers or luggage (for some strange reason - there seems to be no effect on MPG whether im solo or with a loaded car) Any experience weird MPG when driving fully loaded or solo?

Just out of curiosity do you guys have the A/C on during these trips? If so is it on Auto or do you manually adjust temp? I find it very hard to believe you're getting these MPG numbers considering I run around with just myself on long drives and avg about 21-22 MPGs but also depends on how many hills/mountains you have as well I guess.

well...actually what makes it stranger is that i had the ac on - i never leave it on auto tho, its just a habit i guess, i just usually leave it on fan 1 -

so.

Ac On - fan sp 1
3 guys + bags for each
80 miles @24 MPG w/K&N filter in - one trip in july, june & may - all the same results.

I will say that without K&N, i would avg about 20, maybe 21 on the highway - regardless of vehicle weight or AC

so my conclusion is that i attribute AT LEAST some of the increase directly to the filter, and possibly summer gas etc. but the results are tangible & real. Ive never been one to tought MPG in the RDX, obv its low - but the addition of the K&N does provide some real results at the pump

how often/miles are you supposed to clean your K&N filters? Do you guys do your own oil changes as well? I'm worried if I get one my wife will take it in for an oil change at the dealership and I'll/she'll forget to mention the filter and they'll throw it away and put in a new paper filter.

It comes with a sticker you place right on the airbox so whoever is changing your oil or working on the car knows it is a K&N and to leave it alone!

Never had a dealer mess with it yet.

forget 50k.

Clean it every 10-15k depending on the conditions in your area. Whether or not it is good till 50k, who knows, all i know is that after doing the K&N thing many times, when u take a look at the filter with 10, 15, most miles i let go was 20k, you will never let it go till 50k without a clean. At 20k, the thing was 3/4s caked, bad, and took 2 cleaning cycles to get it back to normal. Do it often, and never have a problem. I periodically would take a look at the filter when i first bought it, just to see how it wore, and im glad i did because you really have no idea how its doing unless you pull it out and take a look - i cant see how K&N recommends 50k unless you are in an evironment with little to no dust, dirt, winter, debirs etc.

Like I said, I was running REALLY low. Once I was at 370 on the trip I was SERIOUSLY feathering the gas. I got to the gas station with like 404 miles on the trip, and I think 16-17 miles to empty.

Also, if you drive 55-65mph you'll get closer to 26-27mpg. I noticed that once on a 100 mile trip I took with it

Oh, and A/C was on the whole time in the SC to NY drive.

She actually doesn't drive hard at all. But the fact that most of her trips are 5 to 15 minutes long probably doesn't help either.

Found the receipt:

I don't remember the exact trip miles, but let's say 404 miles (it was somewhere around 403-404-405)

Price: $2.859/gallon
Paid: $48.00
Filled: 16.789 gallons

Works up to 24.06 miles - Guess the trip computer isn't that accurate after all.

I've also found that 50-60mph is a real sweet spot for my RDX.....only problem is that my normal HW speed is more like 70-80mph. I'll gladly give up 1-2mpg on the HW if I can go 10more miles in an hour.

267.5Miles---Put in 14.676 Gallons (Giant Eagle Gas this time since I had $1.10 in fuel perks!). (10%HW/90%City)
Actual MPG 18.2
RDX Trip Computer MPG 18.5

This tank was nearly all stop and go city driving. I didn't really BABY the throttle either.

Lots of Cruising HW driving on this tank. I drive more 70-80mph, so my HW MPGs no doubt suffer a little because of the speed in which I drive.

300 Miles---Put in 15.079 Gallons (60%HW/40%City)
Actual MPG 19.9
RDX Trip Computer MPG 21.2

Alot of HW miles early in the tank, and more stop and go towards the end. Trip computer was high by 1.3mpg this time! Finally Filled up with Shell V-Power 93Oct this time too...the Two previous tanks were Giant Eagle Get-Go Gas 93Oct (Used lots of fuel perks to get cheap gas, and then one tank of random little town 91oct gas during a trip).

what you should do is record how much u put in and check it vs the ob. miles/gallon used. That is what I do. I used the B trip clear it when I fill up and drive until the next time I refill.

That's a big discrepancy. In my experience the computer is pretty accurate
I have not reset my B trip since 8K miles ago...I programed the computer to auto reset the A trip itself after each fill up (yes, you can do that) and get pretty close to actual too.

I never want to reset trip B. I am using it as my TOTAL CAR MPG for the life of the car.

Here is my fill up procedure. I keep it exactly the same every single time.

I fill up the tank until the pump stops itself because it thinks the tank is "full". I then proceed to put in exactly 1 more gallon after that point. I do this every single time so I know that I'm putting in as close to the same amount every time.

From all of my experience with Acura and their Trip Computers (since 2004) I have found that more often than not the trip computer is on the HIGH SIDE by about 1mpg. This can vary about +/- .3mpg depending on your driving style.
