Hole in the console next to 12v?

I just got a 2007 RD w/out Tech. I'm wondering: what's that sort of hole between the bun warmer controls, to the left of the 12v? Seems like it could be potentially a fantastic slot, if I were to find/make something to fit right, for an easily removable, and stable, base for a smartphone mount! Because, frankly, I love that the old school screen doesn't age as quickly as color screens do, but hey, I'd love nav.

All right. This is a mild project that, heh, I may be able to do: find something that fits /perfectly/ into that slot that a base for a smartphone mount might be screwed into. Time to get to measuring. Heh, I wonder if I could even 3d print some of these, if I pull off a prototype.

Getting it going! I usually just toss extra stuff like gum, keys, etc in that slot.

Well, it seems like a nice plastic bar fitting snugly into there would be the perfect thing to clamp a smartphone mount onto. One of those flexible rod things, firmly secured, perhaps. Suction cups suck.

Yeah, that slot is the perfect size to fit smart phones...from 2007. Fast forward to 2015 and mine is regulated to the jack-of-all-trades cup holder.

3 packs of cards (minus a few from the third pack), some electrical tape, and a MagicMount later, and I have a perfectly fitting, ideal custom magnetic smartphone holder with no wobble. Total cost: $16 or so at Walmart, and it's far more stable than every single other smartphone holder, more convenient, and riiiiiight next to the aux ports and charger too. Also found a flushmount USB 12v adapter at Best Buy (the smallest Griffin one) that the little 12v hatch closes smoothly over with no problem. Pics forthcoming. This is stable and pretty damn perfect, and hides nothing but the nowadays useless CD player.

That spot is where you were supposed to keep your iPhone or iPod while listening to music, plugged into the stereo jack and the 12v power.

Also my old Blackberry Pearl used to fit in there perfectly.

Isn't it a pity that smartphones' gotten too big now? Lol

The spare change holder in the console is much more convenient. Unless you like to hoard pennies.

I tried to use the little cubby for spare change; but, it was too hard to get it out with my fat fingers. The arm rest change holder doesn't hold enough and I always get/need pennies. I found this coin holder on Amazon for $10 that holds $15.62 of pennies (42), nickles (32), dimes (46) and quarters (36). I just keep it in arm rest. I got this from my my MDX also because it doesn't have a change holder for some reason.

Maybe because if you can afford an MDX you only deal in paper. Or so they assume.
