Extreme Cold Question

Hey there,

Our temperatures can sometimes get to -30C for extended periods in the winter(Canada eh).

Anyone with experience with the RDX and operation after sitting in very cold weather for awhile (ie 2+ hours). How are the electronics, displays, etc. Seems like a lot of LCD stuff in the car, and I'm wondering how it fairs in that situation.

I live near NYC and temps here around freezing at night. Whenever I have a cold start in the morning, I see the screen lag a little bit if I change cd tracks or radio stations etc... But this also happened in my Pilot as well so I'm guessing this is normal. After she warms up, then there is no more lag or anything like that.

Suggestion - wait a good clean 5 minutes. (warming up).
that'll do the trick...
it's just patience.

Last year when my RDX was parked in single digits (Fahrenheit) for extended periods I had the occasional problem of the SH-AWD light staying on after starting it. After taking it to the dealer who downloaded the codes, they said it was due to low voltage in the SH-AWD system. The battery was actually fine, but because of the extreme cold the voltage dropped below some minimum level. The light always went off after driving it for a while and then turning it off and restarting it.

LOL, we have our ways

Really, there are 2 months that are cold here (Saskatchewan). Because it's the Prairies, it gets colder here than most places. The trade off though is incredible spring, summer and fall weather, lots of open air, and no smog.

Besides, what's the point of having the best small SUV on the market unless you have some snow to play in?

Non winter temps here are 70-90f btw.

I'm with you XIS - ya dont shovel heat bro'! lol

But I bet the turbo loves the cold, plus you probably get a half gallon more fuel in your tanks when it is that cold than we get.

Plus, a block heater is standard equipment!

I'm sure you have no idea what a block heater is...right?

The only issue I've noticed is that the display is somewhat darker. As is my mood until the seat heater does its BTU thing.

Block heater? you guys are hard core! We only heat our houses one at a time - you guys heat the whole block! lol

And if any of y'all have been to San Diego - they are even worse there. When the nights get cool, they dont put on jackets or just go inside, they crank up propane heaters and heat the outdoors! UFB

Everything a manufacturer puts in a car is tested in the coldest temps and tested in the hottest temps. There is far too much money at stake for a manufacturer to use components that can't take the extreme temps. It'll be fine.

hahaha, man I have an s2000 as my daily driver in Minneapolis - I park outside at work - if it starts like a champ in the negatives all winter long after sitting all day, the RDX sure as heck should...of course we may never know because my wife drives the RDX to work and she has heated parking on both ends of her commute...spoiled!

Mine works good. Engfine idles a bit rougher when cold and I use a block heater as much as possible if the temps are below about -10-12C

Hi There Canuckle

I was in Regina this past weekend for my daughters hockey tourney. I stayed at the 7 oaks. I am from Swift Current and man it was a chilly weekend wasn't it. My Red RDX said -27 on saturday morning and i did not have it plugged in. Started fine but it took about 15min for the readouts to start working smoothly.
What colour is your RDX??

I got the White Diamond Pearl...love it, although keeping it clean in the cold is a challenge for sure.

Much nicer here this week, thank god.

Yours is an 07 or 08? And, tech or base?

Ok...I'm assuming this was a joke, but no smiley. If you were serious, speak up - and we'll clarify.

It gets pretty cold here in the upper northeast too. I've driven to work many times in -20 to -30F. I have experienced the following in cold weather:

1. Nav display takes a LOOOOONG time to brighten and be comfortably readable. This seems to be worse this year than last - not a good sign. I was worried about this from the beginning. Cold starts are bad on cold cathode lighting systems (and since I don't have any better info, I believe that's what the backlight is using).

2. Steering wheel creaks until it's warmed up. I believe this is related to the springs associated with the wiring spool - but I just haven't complained to my dealer yet.

3. Intermittent 'Passenger Airbag Off' warnings. They only happen in the cold weather, and returning the seatback to full upright seems to fix the problem. Again, I have lots of warranty left, so I'm not going to worry about it now. Getting things fixed is always easier after a complete or repeatable failure....

Mike

Yeah she works in downtown; there isn't really an option to getting a monthly rate at a heated garage. Pricey, but damn nice in February.

Hi Mine is a 07 tech red with front spoiler, leather shifter and door protecter(i have yet to put them on).

When did you buy your RDX. I had a deposit on a white RDX (in sept 07)in regina but was unable to make deal with the dealership there( long story) so I bought mine in Calgary.

My red is also hard to keep clean. How is the piant job on your RDX. The bumpers are a darker shade than the metal parts on mine.

Other than that it has worked perfect with 15,500 km so far.

Just bought it last week. I think the paint is fine, though I have not looked at it as closely as some might. I don't see any glaring differences.

Same thing is happening to me also, I live northern NJ, the past week it has been cold here and received the message every morning on the way to work with niothing on the seat at all.
I will check with the dealership next time I go in for service, does not happen when someone is in the seat.

Try this...move the seat forward, and 'return the seatback to it's full upright position'. Let me know if you stop getting it. It seems to help mine.

2 months? You must have a different definition of cold. Regina has 5 months with the average high at freezing or below.

Coming from Edmonton you know as well as I do (I lived there for 2 years) it's usually only very cold in Jan/Feb (exception noted for this year).

I don't mind cold...it's lower than -15C that gets on my nerves.
