Extreme Cold Issues?

Anyone have any issue with getting the ice to clear from the windshield when it is really cold? I was really hoping that there was some wiper de-icer / heating element in the windshield like my WRX had.

Also, does the navi screen look fainter when it is cold or is it just me?

Thanks,

Greg

Define really cold...that could be anywhere from +40 to -40 based on where folks on here are from.

I just used the windshield defroster on hi. It gets really hot so I open the moonroof and it has worked wonderfully for me. The cool air coming in from the outside cooled the cabin while the defroster melted the ice on the windshield.

Good point. It was -7F here the other day with windchills close to -40F.

As for the navi screen. I think I have seen a difference in milder conditions. Say 20F, kind of weak. 30F with a warm car, brighter.

It was -30C (-22F) + windchill here a few days ago. I had no trouble defrosting the windshield with the defrost setting. It works really well. I didn't notice any difference in the nav screen, though I have the base model, not the Tech.

Pretty much the same conditions as Reimroc over here. Same, no problem defrosting the windshield. I do notice that the screen (non-nav) has a slow response time when it's cold out.

Something very strange happens in my RDX when its below 30F. My wife first noticed it and I didn't believe it until this morning. When the car is cold and I depress the brake, there is a loud clunking/grinding sound, like something isn't attached properly. I her stand outside while I stepped on the brake pedal a few times, allowing it to travel as far down as it can each time. She said she couldn't hear the "clunk" outside the car at all. So it seems to me, the brake pedal makes a "clunking/grinding" sound as if it is not lubricated? Does the brake pedal need any grease anywhere? Anyways, after a few minutes of using the brake, the noise is gone. Maybe this had something to do with the cabin temperature rising. The gas pedal and the parking brake are fine. Again, this only happens when temp is below 30F. Does this happen to anyone else here? I'm going to bring it to the dealer when I get a chance, but I fear for the "unable to duplicate" line...

This could this be the transmission shift lock; I know the solenoid is a little loud on my TL when it's cold...

Is there anyway to check if this is it?

I forgot to add that the clunking is really very loud, almost the same loudness as softly shutting the rear doors. I was really surprised how loud it was when I first heard it.

I've had no issues other than the TPMS sensors going out of order temporarily for 10 minutes.

Defrost works fine and I usually have A/C off (it's not humid here). My biggest complaints are that the rear defrost is a bit weak and when it's warmer out, the coldest setting is 19 (66F). On a warmer winter day, when I just get out of the shower, I'm wearing a winter coat, gloves and drinking a coffee - it's too hot.

when its really cold, like below +10F my audio system sounds like "Mars Attacks" martians for about 20 seconds. Amp is very distorted, for first few seconds. The car is almost always on XM when started.

if you are in the car the nite prior to the cold, or in the car at anytime before its going to sit for a while, the mouisture from inside and outside creats an environment for ice from when you had the heat on and freezes extremely quick, , thus, the end result is the ice that clings to the glass and takes forever to get rid of...quick solution, de-icer spray. if not, ur going to be waiting a good 10-15 mins or out there hacking at the glass...

Weird, we've been seeing a lot of overnight single digits lately in Boston, and when I go to start up my RDX in the morning, aside from the battery cranking very slowly, everything works just fine. I have noticed that the Navi screen was very dim, but I chalked it up to sun glare.

does anyone have issues starting in the cold? We've been getting a couple weeks of -30 to -15 during the night. The rdx starts really really hard, it normally takes 2-3 min to get it to turn over. I think it does it on purpose so I will put it in the garage.

for me, when it gets about 30F or below, the HFL system does not respond when the car starts. Pressing the steering wheel control does nothing. It takes about 5-15 minutes depending on the actual outside temp for the HFL to work.

Called up acura service about this and was told to expect this due to cold weather. They told me some people even have problems with the navi screen not working until the car warms up. They did tell me if it'll make me feel better i can bring the car for an inspection. Haven't find the time to do that.

Anyone else experience problems with their HFL due to cold weather?

JGard...yeah I live in Boston as well. I get the same thing. But every now and then it won't startup on the first try but has no problem on the 2nd try. It just starts up really slow. I'm going in for service tomorrow so I'm just going to mention it to them but they probably won't do anything. I'm also having them look at my struts and suspension because I've heard from multiple people that theres have been leaking so I want them to check it out. I don't believe I'm about to see this but I'm actually looking forward to taking it in because it'll get washed and vaccumed. Finally!!!

I didn't have issues with the temperature, but after they updated the software for the Navi (they say that it controls that too) I haven't had any more issues with the HFL...have them do that if you have not already done it.....No, not talking about getting a new CD....

hahahahahaha.....the OP is talking about extreme cold, the kind that you get in the North East or the mountains, not in beautiful (desertic) Nevada....

After several consecutive days of sluggish starts in single digit Fahrenheit weather, I had to clean out a spot in the garage for her. The garage needed to be cleaned anyway.

Today was her maiden voyage in the snow. Besides RWD and FWD cars I've had a light 4x4 pickup and a Honda Pilot. They were both good in the snow, but I think the RDX does *FAR* better.

The trade-off is us old people can't "drive" the car in bad weather. I tried to steer into a slide during a turn tonight. VCS must have thought I was out of control and cut power until I regained traction. If you can remember getting your first car with ABS you can probably relate.

I am pleased with everything else in cold weather so far. I am particularly impressed with how quick the heater produces warm air.
