Experienced a popping noise when accelerating, should I be concerned?

I was driving on the highway today for the first time, I was at around 95km/h (60m/h) and when I accelerated a little more aggressively than I typically would-trying to get to 110/120 (70-75)-I heard a pop and promptly after the steering wheel jerked considerably.

Something similar happened about a half hour before this but I don't think it was as loud as I don't remember exactly how that went down. And it hasn't happened again; although, I was being more cautious right after.

Is this a normal thing? Like, is this a thing that can generally happen with a car in general in such a situation? Has this happened to any of you?

Apologies if this is stupid or in the wrong place

Never heard of anything like that. It is not normal to have any kind of popping noise. Where is it coming from? The engine or the PS pump?

I recall in some posts way back a couple peeps mentioned what almost seemed like a turbo backfire? ...or blow by of some sort that may have caused something similar under a hard 2 gear downshift that puts you near redline in 2nd...
Could be info Worth digging for...

its the wastegate issue that has a worn metal bit on it in my case. also higher then stock boost settings seem to add to this problem. this may also be your problem.

Thanks for the replies!

The sound sounded like it came from somewhere around the front end of the car, I don't know much about cars so can't put my finger on exactly where.

Most likely didn't hit anything cause it was a populated highway although it's plausible.

Hmm.. interesting I'll definitely try to look for that!

I'm pretty certain my car is stock though, if that's what you're saying (don't know for certain b/c bought used from non-dealer seller-weird circumstances didn't allow for many questions about the car)

I have a 2007 Tech which has been stock since I bought it at around 55k miles. I've had this happen once in a while but I think it's only happened to me when I've floored it when the engine is still cold (within a minute or two of starting it). It seems to be the same issue as another member described here:

https://acurazine.com/forums/problem...d-gear-860685/

I recently hit 100k miles and it happened again the morning after. This time though I got the SH-AWD and Check Emissions lights and a P0234 error code (Turbocharger/Supercharger 'A' Overboost Condition). The Check Emissions light stayed on for a couple of days but cleared. I haven't had any problems since then but I'm trying not to go WOT until the car has warmed up better (a good idea anyway I'm sure).

I'm going to try to change out the spark plugs soon to see if that helps.

I was driving on the highway for about a half hour to fourty-five minutes before this happened both times so I don't think my engine was still cold.

My check emissions light came on last night while driving on the highway again but no pop. This had happened before but cleared after pumping up with 94 because my brother was previously pumping 89 in my car so we dismissed the probelm.

Thanks for the link I'm definitely going to take my car to get looked at and I'm gonna ask about the spark plugs!

Let me know what happens with you

Get the code from the light and that'll point you in the right direction. Or tell us what the code is and someone here will point you in the right direction.

Strange. In my mom's RDX (bought new, driven lightly, 123k miles), when you get into the gas, the turbo makes a squeaking/squealing noise. It's very linear to the speed of the turbo. Anyone heard of this?

Maybe this is what happens when you buy the first turbo (production) car from Honda... I think we've either all been lucky, or Honda is good at trying new things

Well, the SH-AWD and Check Emissions lights came back a couple of times this week. Each time it went off was while I was WOT, passing a car or otherwise getting up to speed. I stopped by Autozone and they pulled the codes: P0234 and P0299. One is for overboost conditions and the other for underboost. Not sure how I pulled that off!

I bought some MAF cleaner while I was there so I'll clean the MAF and check the hoses this weekend. Can anyone suggest anything else to look at before I bring it to the dealer?

Woops, totally forgot about posting this. Brought the car in for a full service to check out the entire car and got the code for the check emissions system light, it was P0420 and the dealer suggested "CATALYTIC CONVERTER BELOW THRESHOLD NEED TO BE REPLACED".

Tons of other stuff wrong with the car too though, so idk if I have anything definitive to say since I don't know anything about cars.

(Some info that may be of interest would be that the power steering is having leaks and multiple fluids needed a flush/change).

Dealer said to replace the whole cat due to a 420 code? I'd replace the o2 sensor first...those tend to fail way more often than cats. And they're much cheaper to replace.

As Tomtwtwtw said, you may want to try just replacing the sensor first.
