For that part, I don't think you want to wax or polish it. Just clean it, and maybe some protectant like 303 aerospace protectant to protect against the sun.

Also when washing be careful not to hit that part with anything like a plastic brush handle or something hard. It does mark up pretty easy.

I used my regular finish -- Klasse sealant -- which is listed to be OK for paint, metal, glass, and plastic (works great on headlights and taillights). Not all finishes are however. But the grill seems to be a satin painted finish, so most wax/finish products should be fine.

do you think it's likely the grill trim can chip, or is it more of a colored plastic than paint so it will be resistant to chipping?

its a siilver satin plated plastic part, so yes it can chip, but it is more likely to just take the hit and dent and ding up. That particular molding piece can be replace for about $45 not including the emblem.
