Correct OEM tire?

Yesterday found a screw in a tire and will take it to the tire place tomorrow to see if it can be repaired. If not, I will have to buy a new tire. However, there exist TWO identical Michelin Pilot MXM4 tires! None of the tire dealers seem to know the difference, yet there is almost a $60 price difference between them. They have different Michelin model numbers and some very subtle spec differences, see Micheline web site:

http://www.michelinman.com/action/ti...ption=Standard

So which one is the correct tire? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

PS: Dealer doesn't know either. They get them from Acura.

He's not after the size, it looks like Michelin has two types of 235/55/18 MXM4.

Well, now I feel like I was a dick...hold on, I was....sorry

If you go to tirerack.com and select "original equipment" it would come up that the tire with 731 revs per mile is the correct tire...model #34331 on your page.

Wait... how many miles do you have on your Michelin tires? If the tires are fairly worn, you don't want to just replace one tire if you have to.

I changed out my set of Michelins with 30K miles on it, because the tire shop indicated that the flat tire can't be repaired.

Cwepruk is correct. I am not after the tire size

I did check the TireRack spec on the tire before I asked the question here. Interestingly, revolutions per minute (731) and overall diameter (28.4 - 28.5) seem to be poiting to one tire, but the section width (9.7") is in line with the specs of the other tire.

I know we are talking about millimeters here, but it's just confusing as to what is the "real" OEM tire.

Mav238,

I am aware of this issue, but I only have 11K on them, or actually even less then that because I swapped them out for winter tires for a good 5 months last year. So, hopefully, this will not be an issue.

I know you already got an answer, but if you go to "Tire Details" > "Specs" and look for the item in the table labeled "Original Equipment", you'll see the 34331 lists "Acura", and the other does not.

Also, the size is 28.5" which matches the Acura size, and the other is slightly smaller at 28.15".

Thanks, ccfoodog. I actually missed that when I was looking at the tire details, but now I see it! Discount Tire called Michelin on my request today and they seem to have confirmed this. It's interesting that DT sell both tires but was initially unable to tell me what the difference between them is Maybe now they will

thoughts?

90k on the stockers? I'm at 28k and there is maybe 10k left (if there was no snow).

You need to look at the tires, bring it to a tire place.....you can really tell by just knowing how many KM/Miles you have on them...

He is talking about Kilometers, not miles....and yes, he has a lot of them, around 56K miles to be precise.

I know (look at my location). I have 28,000 km (18k miles) on my RDX and there isn't much tread left. I don't drive it very hard either.

You can easily tell how much tread is left by looking at them or buying a cheap tire tread depth gauge.

Sorry, I am an idiot......I didn't see that....but if you are really out of rubber with only 18Kms there is an issue, either you still have rubber, but don't think you do, or you driving habits are really aggressive, or the tires are defective...sorry, that's all I got.

It's not out of rubber, but it's only got about 30% left (so it's not very good in the snow right now). There are more than a few reviews on tire rack where people wore them out in 20-30k miles.

Rarely driven hard, always kept at 35 psi.

I was hoping to do around 120K on the stocks ... my TSX did that, easy

So since clearly the stocks aren't very good then, what's a good, repalcement that won't kill the bank account? I'm also thinking of getting rid of it next year, so don't want to go crazy.

Any sugestions? How're the Kumho's and Yoko's?

The stock Michelins have wear bars so it is easy to tell how much tread you have. I hit the wear bars around 31k miles and just returned my 07 lease at 33k miles. The inspector told me the tires must be replaced but fortunately, the Acura lease's wear and tear allowance covered all 4 tires. Glad I didn't have to spend $1000 on tires I'd never use!
