Competition...now from Mercedez

The Q5 - is only concept photoss
just think of a smaller q7...
w/ a v6 option.
As for the Benz...Total rip off of the X3, and trying to compare itself to the RDX.
oh, the Benz's these days, as I constantly say..CHEAP INTERIOR!!!

Looks OK. That 38K list price is pretty funny.
I bet north of 45K is going to be what it comes in at.
Volvo has something coming out as well. I would look for Caddy to enter this segment in the next couple of years.

Now, why do people always say "Competition for the RDX", each time they see a new luxury CUV on the market ? I really don't think Mercedes was particularly eyeing or targeting at the RDX. I am not saying the Acura is not a great brand or anything like that... And RDX is not selling like hotcakes either, so that can't be the reason why MB is coming into this market segment to challenge the RDX.
It is more likely that the trend is for people to go into the slightly smaller CUV section, that MB is now building vehicles for this segment.
I find it really amusing to see folks here react by claiming other car brands are "making cars to compete" with their awesome RDX.
RDX is a great little CUV to drive and own, I personally like it, but I won't go that far to feel like it's the King of the CUV crop, that everyone is coming after it to challenge it... RDX is definitely not the bench mark in this segment... Otherwise, it would be selling like hotcakes now...
I like the RDX like you all here do ... but we need to be "realistic" as well ...
I see that it has the same easy to scratch hand rails as the RDX has. I'd be really surprised if they price it at $38K as well. Problem with Mercedes and BMW and those types of cars are you're always paying a lot more for brand in the end.
I agree that the $38K (or higher) base price means that it will not really compete with the RDX. And all those options are going to push the loaded price up to at least $50K. Those Germans really like to price everything separately.

I remember when I owned the 1999 Acura TL, trading it in for the 2001 BMW 330i was considered a "big step up" in the class of car, for me.
If the MB GLK is considered as a competitor for the RDX, it is also a competitor for the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-7 etc... I don't think MB had that in mind...
If MB is really wanting to compete with the RDX, it will drop its ridiculously high prices to match the RDX.
along those lines, why or how was the RDX pitched directly at the X3 in basically every comparo...the X3 is much more costly....why would the EX35 be compared to the RDX or vice versa? to claim the benz isnt in the category is odd. is the ex35 in its category? same pricing as a Benz, but more expensive than the Acura....so should they be directly compared?
to say they are separated by price is one thing, but to say that the RDX isnt competition for the GLK or vice versa, at least from a specification standpoint, i dont agree with that. I agree an MB buyer may not consider the RDX, buy they def are COUNTERPARTS versus completey different vehicles. to say they aret, well i just dont see how you can say that besides the price difference.
also, what IS the benchmark CUV? the X3? then along the price guidlines it really isnt in the RDX class? thus, what is the benchmark for the RDX class? where does the RDX fall? it beat the X3 in one comparo magazine, came 2nd in another....but should we discount this? what happens when they compare the x3, glk, rdx, ex35 all together......?

Well, the benchmark in this particular category is definitely not the RDX, and I am not knocking at the RDX. I own one and I like it. But if it was the benchmark, like the BMW 3 series is for the sports sedan for many years (and is still selling like hotcakes), then it would be advertised as such in many if not all automotive journals and notable car shows.
What I was pointing out was simply that MB is NOT "aiming" at the RDX when it brought out the GLK, much like the Infiniti G37 and Lexus IS350 is aiming at the BMW 335i.
When I say that, it does not mean I am saying the RDX is crap... I am just amused that eveytime a luxury car maker brings out a CUV, immediately the inference is that the car maker is trying to compete with the RDX... why can't MB be "aiming" at X3 or the X6 (new CAV)?

Sorry, you have to select your location to get in. Looks much better than the concept pics.

But that doesn't stop all of us from looking at a new vehicle introduction like this and, subconsciously or otherwise, wondering if we would have considered or gotten it had it been out when we made our own decisions. In most cases the answer will be no, because we chose the RDX and tend to like it, so the responses are things like it's ugly, it's too expensive, it's not sporty enough, the interior looks cheap, etc. To us AFTER THE FACT we're comparing the vehicles, not really saying the other manufacturers are out to snatch away future RDX sales.

so again Mav...what is the benchmark, u didnt address a single thing i said. is there a benchmark? you speak like there is but havent mentioned one
also, i dont think anyone is taking these posts the way in which you think we are.
no one said the MB wasnt aiming for the X3, it certainly IS, they basically cloned teh X3 styling, but when the X3 also competes with the RDX and vice versa, then now the MB is in the same category. just like a TL, 3 Series, G35, and A4 all compete against eachother, in essence they are different vehicles with diff pricing but still remain in the same category/class.

It is not as bad looking as some have suggested, but the exterior is just a little to squared off for me. The interior is OK, I do not like the dull wood finish look, think it would look a little better more shiny.
As it regards to it competion, if you would have read the article here is the segments they are going to go after.
It's designed to compete with the aforementioned X3 and the Volvo XC60, Infiniti EX35/37, Acura RDX and upcoming Audi Q5 and production version of the Cadillac Provoq.
