Wink Spied Again

01/05/2009, 1:10 PM

Acura focused on it passenger car lineup in 2008 — with updates to the company’s TSX, TL and RL sedans — but it looks as though Honda’s luxury brand will be switching its focus to its crossover lineup in 2009. Our spies have once again spotted a 2010 RDX prototype while undergoing some final shakedown testing.

While Acura has the new features of this RDX covered in camouflage tape that matches the color of the paint, the changes are still easy to see. The 2010 RDX will take on the new corporate face of Acura — for better or worse — which includes a TL-derived front grille, a restyled lower fascia and new fog lights.

It’s not known if the RDX’s turbocharged 2.3L inline four will receive any performance or fuel economy tweaks. However, rumors are now circulating that the RDX will be offered in a front-wheel drive model.

Although the changes are slight, the improvements should keep the RDX refresh in an ever-expanding segment.

Watch for this new RDX to possibly debut at the 2009 New York Auto Show in March.

no taillamp LEDs, exhaust tips look like they belong on a truck or traditional SUV. also looks like they are going with a smaller, perhaps projector beam style foglamps. even the high beams look like projectors now too. at least now it matches the style of the taillamps. wonder what the new wheels will look like.

Acura's Production Plans for Coming Months Reflect Low Expectations

Credibility Rating: 7

Obviously things are getting pretty dire out there in showrooms across America, and Acura is not immune to this.

We have received credible information regarding Acura's production plans going forward. Below are some key points.

* 2009 TSX production ends after January. No more '09 TSXs will be built. Next production for the TSX begins in August, for the 2010 model. For 2010 a V6 version has been confirmed, but it will be available only in limited quantities.
* First quarter vehicle production has been reduced. Basically March's original production plan has been lopped off, and the total number of vehicles scheduled for January and February production will be spread across the entire quarter (NOTE: This is different than what I initially posted, I originally misinterpreted the information)
* Unless I'm interpreting my information incorrectly '09 RL production has already ceased. RL production will not begin again until the 2010 model production run begins in May.
* Delivery slowdown to dealerships: A 6-day (per week) transit delivery schedule has been cut in half to 3 days of deliveries per week.
* Only TLs and RDXs are scheduled to be produced during the month of April. The total production will be just barely over 1000 units, with roughly 65% of that total being TLs.
* Production will pick up again in May, with just under 4500 total units scheduled for production. Roughly 40% will be TL, 40% MDX, 10% RDX and about 10% RL.
* June production will remain roughly level with May, but the distribution is shifted around a bit, with the RL seeing no production, the TL seeing fewer units and the MDX making up a little more than 65% of the month's production (presumably the 2010 model)
* Acura Production for the entire 2nd quarter appears to be fewer than 10000 units.
* 2010 MDX will be the MMC model, appearing in showrooms in late August.
* 2010 RDX is also getting an MMC, and should appear in showrooms in the July/August timeframe. The FWD model is confirmed by the information I received.

Given the economy my guess would be Acura will try to get the MMC MDX and MMC RDX into showrooms before late summer to increase traffic and possibly clear out some inventory of '08 and '09 models. I look for 0% loans, something Honda/Acura has not done before (I think), and some crazy prices.

While the auto market is down there are still a lot of new and used buyers out there. My Acura dealer in Indy is begging for good used cars, particularly Acuras.

While I was going to wait until June of '10 to buy a new '10 RDX I might go for one in the fall. Time will tell.

Will be interesting to see performance (and MPG) figures on the FWD...

It should be pretty quick off the line. The SH-AWD system on the TL adds about 240lbs, 4WD adds 119lbs to the CR-V. You'd figure weight reduction would be somewhere in between those figures.

Wink +1

My guess would be that the FWD will get +1 MPG as that is what the base TL gets over its SH-AWD counterpart.

I would be curious to see if they try anything else like VCM. This has yet to be implemented in any Acura product & altho gas prices have gone down, I am sure it will not stay <$2/gallon forever. Diesel is apparently on hold & Honda does not seem to keen on moving forward w/ their hybrid IMA system except for small cars like Civic, Insight & CR-Z ... direct injection or 6+speed also seems unlikely in the immediate future. VCM would be probably get another +1 for the FWD RDX which would be better than nothing.

It seems like all other luxury makers are moving forward w/ hybrids and/or diesels & Honda/Acura really should @ least keep up IMHO. If not for the whole environmental thing @ least for bragging rights in the luxury market *cough* advance *cough*

I knew they would do this. I called it back in the summer when the new TL, RSX, and RL came out. I was at the dealer for an oil change and I was talking to the salesman that sold me my RDX and I noticed that all the Acura grills looked the same except the RDX. Then I bet him that they would modify the RDX grill in 2010 to match the rest and here it is.

I wonder if the new grill would fit the current RDX.
