Weird Starting Problem

I'm assuming it's ignition related but maybe someone has had the same problem. So my car (182xxx) 2.2 Manual has had an awkward starting issue lately, especially the last 3000 miles. When I turn the key over to start, it just clicks like the starter is dead, like the car is making no attempt to turn over. Then, after turning the key to either accessory or completely off, several times, it will start back up as if there were no problems. I was wondering if it had anything to do with weather and heat because it's acted up over the summer especially. I know it can't be the starter or alternator because I'm familiar with those symptoms. Anyone else have any similar situations and have advise?

so it cranks just fine but doesn't want to turn over? I'd put my money on the fuel relay. It's located under the dash above the steering column. The problem is that the solder they used expands when the weather gets hot and cracks. New one is about 50 bucks but you can take yours apart and re-solder the bad points on the green board inside it. I had the same problem with my sisters accord last summer every time it got hot, and my cl did it this summer. It's a pretty easy fix, hard part is finding it and trying to get it down. Check second gen problems and fixes forum for a couple recent threads about this.

When all you hear is loud clicks from the starter and battery is good, the starter solenoid contacts are worn out. You can usually get a start by rapping the starter firmly w/ a hammer. This will jar the contacts and usually cause a start.

Fix is easy. Replace starter, or if you're handy w/ a soldering iron you can remove the solenoid and replace the contacts for about $10 or so. Contacts and DIY are available at Sherco Auto Supply (sherco-auto.com).

good luck

well there isn't any loud clicks, it just turns the accessories on when i turn the key. it sounds like its probably that relay.

i think i have exactly the same problem with my car, sometimes when i turn the key and the car doesn't start and only the accessories will turn on, no loud clicks from starter or anything.

What i do that works for my car is just play with the clutch and find the "sweet spot" to where the car will start, works for my car 100% of the time
