Transmission won't go into gear. Help

Hey guys. I'm new to the forum. I did try searching i couldn't find anything.

I got recently got a white 97 2.2 5spd for $2000 with the odometer stuck at 175k. haha. I thought it was a good deal and I needed something it was a bit of a fixer upper but hey that's what I love to do. Good car, I love it and look forward to fixing it up a lot.

Well my transmission makes a grinding noise when I try to put it into gear. I was able to get it into second and stuff but then that started to get just as bad and now it won't go into any gear at all.

The very first time I noticed something not right I checked the fluid and it was empty and I added some and it worked for awhile. But then it messed up again and when I checked the fluid maybe I added some or not but it didn't make a difference this time around.

So now the transmission is like completely shot and I don't know what to do. Someone said it might be the syncronizers (whatever that is). someone also said it might not be getting the fluid but I don't know???

bring it in to a transmission specialist, stat! Sounds like the clutch is toasted, or your gears are hosed.

you probably need to get your syncros replaced. Its common for our cars to not go into gear sometimes. i had a hard time finding reverse today. but after getting it into gear it was fine. Like what ducky said, your clutch might be fried already.

well I need to do it myself. How do I go about doing that? I have most of the tools, looking to save some money. And possibly upgrade the tranny and make it better then stock? Any ideas?

On a side note. I'm thinking of swapping in a new engine. Could anyone tell me what's the best engine swap for our cars? And if so am I going to need to put a tranny that matches or can I keep mine. If so I guess there's not much point in upgrading mine now while its broke if I'm going to replace it right.

I suggest getting a HELMs service manual for the specific application. Such as if you are going to continue use a 2.2 manual transmission, then get that service manual. It has a VAST amount of information, such as torque specifications, clearances, etc. It's not cheap, but it's cheaper than labor and it will make the job quicker and more straight forward. Good luck. Take pictures.

Does anyone know what the green plug is underneath the passenger side dash right against the left side. I just noticed it was unplugged and plugged it in, just curious.

WEll maybe if I specify alittle more it might help.

It doesnt just not go into gear. It grinds like crazy when I try to put it into gear. When it first happened when I was on the road and I was forced to get it home or be towed. I was able to force it into second and it would just make a grinding erch which sounded like it hurt but it would make it into gear and got me home. But then got so bad it won't even do that. It just goes EEEEEEERRRRCCCHHHHHHH ouchie ><

I found this post

it sounds most like my problem I think, maybe, anyone?

I bled my clutch fluid and it seems to be fine and bleeds fine so does that rule out the slave cylinder being bad or does that not matter?

I went and checked under the rubber boot deal on the slave cylinder and it didnt have excess grease but I noticed when I was pressing it to the side that mukky looking fluid started the sort of pump and leak out of it, I'm "assuming" this mean its dead?

Try changing the slave cylinder. It's probably been through enough wear and tear by now. That sounds like the best shot.

Well I checked the old slave cylinder and it did move back and forth when the clutch was pressed, did this mean it wasn't really broken? Well anyway, I changed it out to a new one, bled it for like 20 minutes. And it still does the same thing. How far is it sposed to push? Like maybe I didnt bleed it enough and it isnt pushing far enough. Although I did bleed the living crap out of it and it seems to me its pushing pretty decent.... But who knows, not I this is all new to me. Any kind of help would be appreciated....

edit: oh yeh I looked at the master cylinder it doesn't seem to be leaking or anything.
