Transmission Problems !

hey fellas so for the last couple of days my transmisson started acting up i drive a 99 3.0 cl at 161k

when i started her up in the morning i warm her up for a bit then when i drive it revs past 3rpm and will knock into gear first to second then second to 3 its done it in the winter when it was real cold after i drive it at real low speeds after a while it starts to shift normaly

is it time for a new tranny ?

i couldn't tell you what kind to get, but i'd say it's GOING, not GONE. Mine kicked a couple times over the winter but it's been fine since then...I think they just like to give you a kick every now and again to play with you.

Overall, a rebuilt tranny works just as well as a new one, and i've had both, so save some $$ and get a rebuilt - took them 2-3weeks to do mine. but i'd say wait until it gets worse, you're fine for now.

ahhh...the good ol infamous tranny...i think i would get it checked out, drive around and let ur car get warm and then take the dip stick check the fluid and smell it. take it to Aamco and let them drive it around. i would re build it before it gets worse and starts jerking hard everytime u change 1st to 2nd. ur torque converter is probably messing up or the solenoids. scarey situations

my tranny over revs/slips when its cold sometimes but only when i put 91 octane, when i use 89(every now and then) it dosent do it for some reason.

you really should just run 87, there's no point to running high octane if it's not specified.

My trans is slow to shift from 2nd to 1st on cold mornings and that's it, otherwise fine. You should try changing the fluid first. It's easier than an oil change, just $9 a quart trans fluid(use Honda's fluid!). That's the bad part, but being a rebuild will be well over a grand, it's a sound investment and worth a try. Mines smoothed out since changing fluid, think it's the first time mine every was done....97k mi.

You've got to drain, fill, drive around and change it again a total of three times to perform a real change. All you need is a 3/8" ratchet and a long funnel. The plug might tell you a lot too, hopefully when you pull it it isn't full of metal, than you might be ok. Mine had a very light coating of pulverized metal.... like paste, but not enough to cause alarm.

If you hear metal chunks hitting the drain pan when you are changing the fluid, you have a problem. Had to keep putting a screwdriver in the drain hole in the accord to keep the fluid flowing when i was draining it to drop it haha.

omg! When I did mine, the fluid actually flowed out so quick, I probably dumped a pint in the driveway before I could move the pan; it was shooting like 3ft. So I guess I'm ok for now.

You dont need to point out the sexual innuendos.

i was so mad at my dad when he wouldnt let me sign the papers and get the first couple CL's i looked at. he insisted the trannys were bad. i didnt believe him.

even though it took 3+ months to find a clean 5spd, i thank him all the time!

Indeed, that is how it happened with the accord. I had to let it warm up in the winter before driving to not have to worry about slipping. Then I started having to do the same thing when summer rolled around... then warming no longer helped and I drove it like an ass all pissed off and nuked it.

It's ultimately unavoidable, so at this point, start saving for a rebuild / refurb.

I have a 2.2 so i can't really help but ebay has a good amount of people selling good tranny. I bought mines 2 years ago running strong ever since. I have the fluid changed twice a year. Reminds me to go in and do it before the summer heat

Also from experience the 2.2 i drive it on 3 (have an auto) for stop and go driving. On highway on leave it on 4.

Why? I have experienced hard shifting when it wants to go back to 3rd from 4th. With this type of shift could be bad for the gears.

The 5th gen accord transmissions (same as 97 2.2) naturally have hard shifts, just how they were designed.

Ive had this happen for the past year or so...like i start it in the morning, put it in gear and itll take a few seconds, kind of jolt, then go...then shifting into each gear, its delayed and revs really high, then shifts...its scary sometimes...then when i stop, it kind of jolts a little. It used to not do it once the engine was hot, but now, I have to drive more while the cars warm for it to stop...then its fine...is everyone sure that its not something else? EGR, all fluids and timing belt were changed recently.
