Transmission gone - 98 3.0

Ok guys,
My car was doing jus fine till wednesday morning but yesterday mornign when i took it out, it started slippin gears and the RPM started revving up...I knew it was a problem with the transmissiona nd I was hoping it would be something small, but I took it to AAMCO today to get it checked and they did not find anything wrong externally or with the electrical system inside. they told me what they will have to open it up and would cost min 2000, 3000 for a new one. The car is 98 3.0 CL and jus clocked 99K miles.

Now the question is to get it repaierd from AAMCO or from someone who will do a cheap job jus to make it sellable or get a decent trade in value for it. Please help. Shoudl I take it to the dealer to get them check it out too? Will Acura replace the transmission under any circumstances knwoing that there is a issue with the auto trannys?

Please help guys, I need an answer asap.

Thanks

there is a group buy for what's called a dr.evil tranny it'll be about 3500 but it is supossed to be unbreakable with faster shifting and lsd...so if you wanna keep the car(considering it's beauty and power) i would go with that...i have a 3.0 and i still have about 30k miles before i get to the point where they all seem to blow up so i am pinching my pennies so i can do the 6 speed swap.

Don't go to aamco I went there about 5K miles ago for a rebuild and i'm already slippin again, it'll be easier and cheaper than the 6 speed swap

it's true, basically for me it boils down to

keep the car=6speed Vs. Dr. Evil
sell the car= make it work...just a litle longer.

first of all there is no way that the dealer will replace it for anything less than $4000.

If you want to keep the car, you can either get a rebuild from somwhere for a regular rebuild that will probably last you another 70k miles, or you can pay a bit more for a dr evil transmission rebuild ($3500 for this one time group buy) it will never fail on you, shifts a little faster/firmer, has lsd for better traction/cornering, and an upgraded torque convertor for better efficiency.

You're trade in value won't change no matter how you replace the transmission, so if you wanna keep it I say get the dr evil.

If you want to just get rid of it asap, look for a used transmission from another 98 or 99 cl and switch em out.

2.3/5 speed= 3.0/auto= as long as you can drive a stick you should be ok, the 3.0 auto is the problem child

Wait, what are you guys talking about the 6 speed swap? Dr. Evil transmittion? Where at? I have my 97 3.0 CL and have always wondered about that. I have 150k on mine and have raced it regularly, but have not had any problems with the tranny. I have been afraid that one day it will fail, but have been lucky so far. Now will this six speed make it faster????? Talk to me guys!!

So, how would I be able to get my hands on this mysterious Tranny... I should have joined this forum a long time ago!!! Thats it, I'm never selling my 3.0 CL. It was the only excuse I had, "its not stickshift." Now I can go full speed with my mods...

take it somewhere else cheaper to rebuild it. if you can.. the actual parts are only 300$ for everything you need to rebuild it. i rebuilt my own in about 2 days. however aamco does have a warranty, i think you can get the 5 year warranty for extra money but i dont think youll have it another 5 years. most people dont. dont get me wrong i had mine for 3 years and i only sold her because i moved to the uk. but now i have a tl-s, they too have tranny probs but its covered until 100k miles.

Thanks guys,
I have decided to get a remanufactured one, drive it for a couple of months, then sell it off once my Lexus IS 350 is delivered...Shoudl get something out of it.

I found this website that sells trannys for a good price and prolly has the best offer if their tranny ever breaks down in the first 12 months or 12000 miles. Most places have the same warranty but do not cover the shipping of the original core of the remanufactured one. Its called www.nyblock.com and ask for Rick. This guy helped me a lot. You can use me as a reference.

With the tranny broken, the car will get you no money...spend abt $2000 or less for a remanufactured tranny and you should be good to go...

Can you give some info on likely ways of finding a cheaper rebuild shop? Sounds like Aamco is expensive, but i noticed they offer a lifetime warranty, but what is the price on their warranty upgrades?

thx for the thread but that information is hardly conclusive. It is unclear what happened, what the product is, what the installation car was and how the product was purchased. This is cause for concern but not evidence.

almost all of the performance transmission companies use alto red eagle clutch packs. if there is a problem to the t/c especially on a lightening, if it was and it prolly was a high stall t/c.. say 3800rpm stall. most boosted 8cly's produce gobbs of boost at that rpm.. which is good for 1/4 times but murder on the t/c from a brake stand launch. the pressures built up in there is almost double what it should be. im not defending dr.evil but it sounds like a faulty t/c is to blame for hommies tranny. if he had used precision industries (speaking from experience 80 mustang lx 418.25 whp) he prolly wouldnt have had the issue to begin with. besides no one on this board is gonna be close to putting down the kind of stress on a t/c as a lightening. well maybee cocoa... if he ever finishes it... which he better.
