Hey all, I posted this up in the wrong forum a few days ago. I'm new here, and still getting used to the site. Just picked up a 99, 3.0 CL that won't go in reverse. Well, the shifter'll go, but the tranny doesn't kick into gear. It'll go into first, but I haven't had it on the road to know if it'll go through the gears. The fluid's a little burnt, but I've seen plenty worse still driving. Is this a tell-tale that I need and rebuild the trans, or am I missing something else?

I'd either have to shave some weight off the car, or get a bigger girlfriend.

But to update, I got the car in the garage tonight (pushing). Just to see what it'd do I put her in reverse, and she grinds, like a gear not meshing.

Thoughts?

Sounds like the reverse gear is shot

 

Put her up on stands last week. She'll shift nicely into 2nd, occasionally into 3rd, and that's it. Debating on tackling a trans rebuild myself. I've done one trans, about 15 years ago, GM trans in a Z28, I wanna say metric 200. Talk me into this, or discourage me from it. If it doesn't happen I'll probably see her the way she is and free up the garage space.

So if I opt to rebuild this thing myself what kind of headaches should I expect? What kind of special tools will it take?
