Tranny Problems
Tranny Problems
So last night, a big group of my friends and some of their friends got together for another meet we've been planning for the last week. It was a terrific turnout, and we managed to get 50+ cars. As many of you may know, the drives out to meets, if your rolling in a pack with friends, may get competitive at times. I pushed my car a little more than I normally do. That being said. On my home, I noticed some abnormal symptoms...
It is a 1998 3.0
-At first, the car would NOT go into gear, the shifter was "locked".
-High RPM at idle, about 2500
-When upshifting into 1st gear or downshifting into 0 the car hardshifts and then kind of "jumps".
-Braking seems really rough/needs to be pressed down abnormally hard when coming to a stop.
-On engine shut off, the engine seems to "Shake" for a second.
Now I've read numerous tranny threads over the last year, but can't seem to remember if any had these same problems I am having. I've searched, but my wording seems to be different from others and I'm not getting good matches.
What the plan was, in case my tranny was to kick the bucket would be a 6 speed swap, but I hadn't imagined it to be this soon. So I'm not sure if that would be an option for me now. I'm also curious as to how a rebuild would hold up. It would still be prone to a higher chance of failure correct? Also if what I read is true, DO NOT flush or replace the tranny fluid, as it could make matters worse?
If anyone has any input, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I had a fuse blow when I had a burnt out gauge cluster that i rigged up until i could find another and my shifter was locked like that. I had to change the fuse and push the release to get it to crank and go into gear. I don't know what all makes it lock but I know that one blew fuse will definitely cause it to lock like that, but if that was your problem the car wouldn't have started. I don't think a transmission problem would cause all those symptoms, i would look for a hose that has come loose maybe one to the brake booster or something because that would cause hard braking, higher RPM idle and also hard shifts and jumping when turned off. really sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere to me. Transmission wouldn't cause any of those other problems except for hard shifting
I know this is your thread but..
i have a 97 and its at 196 000 kilometers.
and i have changed the tranny fluid.
My car when it shifts from 2nd to third (while driving),feels like it slips before it enters 3rd gear.
When the car is at a stand still and my foot on the brake, putting car to 2nd gear it goes THUNK. going to gear 1 or 3 from 2nd gear (at a stand still) the car goes THUNK.
2 years ago i had the same type of problem where car shifts at a very high Rpm in all gears, turns out it was my throttle body, had it replaced.
Is this normal, i do not think this is.
Any body have an idea??

Thanks for the suggestions fellas I'll check my hoses out tomorrow along for possible leaks. I know underneath my steering wheel, at the pedals I've had a fluid leak on my foot occasionally and right before this started happening I did have something leak when I hit a corner sharp. I'm not sure what leaked though, as it didn't have a smell to it. I figure it had always been water from some drain above since it's been raining.
Any other ideas though?

So my gears aren't locking up anymore but the engine is still shaking on ignition shut off which could be somethin called "dieseling" I've been reading about, basically where there is carbon build up that's firing even after the engine is cutoff for a second.
The RPM's are about 2K on idle, and the hardshifting I was referring to might be something I'm overthinking. I believe the hardshift is that "jump" I'm referring to, which occurs whenever I let off the brake going in drive or reverse. When I let of the brake when at a stop and "coast" it will jump and the car will move significantly faster than average. About 2-3x as fast, which I believe is causing that "jump". Not so much the tranny anymore I believe.
I'm still not so sure what it could be though. I checked for a few leaks today but was unsuccessful. Then again I had only searched briefly and leaks are not easily distinguished.
