Scraping sound from trasmission in park

99 CL 3.0 with 98K on the clock. There is an oscillating (not constant but in rhythm) scraping noise coming from the automatic transmission while it is in park or neutral and the noise stops when it is placed in gear. Going to have it looked at but does anyone know what this may be or how serious?

The fluid is light brown to clear and was power flushed at 60K.

are you sure it is the transmission 100%? It could be valves or any other part very close to the tranny. I have a clicking noise at 2-3Hz that what appears to come from the tranny but is related to something else possible a vaccum controlled valve or something that hooks to the driver side shock mount and has a hose going to the throttle body (dont know exactly need pics to identify and dont have time etc).

To identify a noise, I use a very light piece of wood, fresh as possible about 0.5" wide and very narrow or a stethoscope kind of thing but instead of drum it has a piece of steel about a foot long. Hold the wood to your ear, but not too tight and as close as absolutely possible and touch different parts of where you think the sound is coming from. You will be quite surprised how well it works, you can hear the different parts operating in your engine

Give that a try and maybe you can bring a positive identification of the part here or have it checked instead of getting run around

I have a stethoscope, and yes I'm sure it's the transmission. I was hoping it wasn't but that's where the noise is comming from. Plus it stops when I put th car in gear.

Worst case scenario, there is a bad bearing somewhere in the transmission.
Just did the timing belt and brakes, so I’m going to spend the bucks to have a rebuilt tranny installed. Then buy some Prozac.

If the prozac is because of the tranny, you better buy a case full. Our trannys suck monkey ass.

Did we ever figure this problem out? Cause I'm noticing this and I would love a 'heads-up' before I attack this problem
