RACK & PINION ????
RACK & PINION ????
Hi Guys,
I have 2.3 cl 98 and when I turn the steering wheel to the extreme right position i hear loud clicking sound and the same when I trun extreme left this is when the car is not moving and static. I recently got both my drive shafts replaced so it is definately not the drive shaft's....
Any idea what could be causing this, my mechanic told me that it is the Rack & Pinion assembly???? is he right??? I mean does any one has any experience with replace the rack & pinion??? and what were the symptoms that caused you to change them???
ANy inputs are welcome...
Thankx
JFK

I looked at my outer tie rod ends the bushing's on there looks really cracked up on both the sides though.....could it also be the lower ball joints......as I guess they are under tremendous pressure when you really crank the steering and may be they are busted...only on one side....

Symptoms suggest bad CV joint/s despite their being "new". It's not uncommon to hear of bad "rebuilt" CV joints.
Several years ago, I went to a rebuild shop in Houston to get a replacement boot put on my 2.2 CL CV axle. They were "rebuilding" axles. From my brief time there, it appeared that rebuilding consisted of visual inspection to make sure it was not falling apart, separating joints, remove old boots, swabbing out CV joints old grease w/ rag (no cleaning!), a swab of new grease, and replacing boots. Presto a "rebuilt" CV axle.
Since then I've check my CV axles more frequently and managed to catch and replace several ripped boots before the mechanical parts were damaged from lack of grease. If you never let a CV joint run dry, they should last life of car.
good luck
