Possible Tranny Problem?

Hey guys, my 98 3.0 with 101k, has been acting kinda strange the past couple of months. For the past couple of months i have noticed the car feels like its not as powerful as it should be. The engine feels restrained, has low throttle response and shifts a tad bit harder than it should. A few days after noticing this my CEL came on for the EGR valve. So I thought that was the problem and a couple weeks later I had my EGR replaced. The car since I got it fixed has been running smooth off and on. Today coming home from school, I really notice it. At first I thought my VTEC wasnt working properly so I kinda tested the car out still coming home from school. I accelerated normally to about 45-50 mph. I then gave the car about 3/4 pedal and it accelerated slowly and all of a sudden it rapidly downshifts and shifts up at about 5500 rpms. I reached about 65 mph and slowed back down to 40 mph and accelerated again at about 1/2 pedal to about 55 mph and the car pulled fine. But the engine still felt restrained. Is this a problem with my transmission? or is something wrong with my engine. I dont think my spark plugs have been replaced yet during the life of the car, but I dont think thats whats causing the problem. BTW, I told my dad and he thinks its this cold funky chicago weather, but I dont believe that. The car is stock too.
