Play in my wiper mechanism???

While browsing my service manual today I came across the specs for where the wiper blades should be sitting at park. This was interesting to me because for the longest time my wipers have been clanking. So I figured maybe they just needed to be adjusted. So I grabbed a 14mm wrench and my digital calipers. Thing is with the wipers off there is play (a good amount) in the mechanism. Makes setting them to the reference points (in this case the plastic guard at the bottom of the windshield) a not exact science. I did mess around with the positioning a bit so I’ll see if that makes a difference next rain storm.

My next thought was to look at the mechanism to see if

A) it can be tightened up
B) is just worn out and needs to be replaced
C) Is fine the way it is

One other thing I noticed is at high speed the driver side wiper travels too far on the up stroke. Basically runs off the side of the windshield.

Any insight would be great!

OK, the mechanism is $162 bucks on the net! Without the motor (that another $170) So that won’t be getting replaced. But it looks like there are lots of grommets and such in there. Maybe it’s just something simple that is worn? Who knows…

BTW, if you read this and you have a chance go see if your wipers have any play at park for me. Just try to move them with your hand and see what happens. Mine move a good 2-3”…

I haven't checked recently, but I'm pretty sure there is no play in the arms.

Ya I think I'm just going to spend the 30ish bucks and replace both linkage arms. That should get things tight again. I'll take a look before ordering them...

I have the same freaking problem, before, my left arm slammed into my hood when there was rain. Working ok when not raining.. or not water on windshield.

I adjusted the arm up, and now it keeps flying off the windshield... and still touches the plastic trim under rain..

Very annoying, i dont know what to do!

I plan to replace the linkage arms in the next few weeks. I'll let you know how it goes. I might even do a DYI...

No clue,, but if you get something from a junk yard from a '94 car those Teflon inserts on the arms (the ones that wear out and cause the play) will be as bad or worse than what you have now. For me it will be worth the 30ish bucks to have wipers that don't clank and run off the wind shield. It's been annoying me for a long time. Glad I found the fix... Now I just need the time to get it done.

yup,, But I would get 11 -12 from here just in case the Acura part is different...

I'm also going to see if the dust seals need to be replaced. I want to see what shape they are in before I place an order. Just need the time to get in there and check things out..

I had some time today, opened it all. The cover is really hard to completely remove, so i didn't bother taking it all out completely, and checked whats underneath. I played with the 2 transmission bars and yes, there is some play!

The dust caps should be ok.. i mean, they are not involved in anything related to the mechanism. Its only to protect the inside. Mine are just fine.

I took some pictures. Its going to be very hard to replace those arms, very awkward spot to reach :S unless i take the hood off...

Nooooooo don’t take off your hood. I have the shop manual. There are just 3 screws to take the entire linkage / motor out. PM me your email and I’ll send you the pages you need for the job (and the specs for where your wipers should be at park).

Also remember geometry. A little play in those linkage arms translates to a large amount of play at the tip of your wiper arms.

True. Just visited my local Stealership to get the parts (35$ +15%tax) for each arm..

I told him about the problem. He says he doesnt think its that. He says i have to change the whole assembly (number 10).

So i really dont know what to do now. Its 340$ for the whole thing.

Of course the stealership told you that… That’s why they are called a stealership. And charge 35 a arm when the LIST price is $20 each, Oh wait, you are in Canada,,, but you get my point…

1st off they don’t trouble shoot anything. They just replace the whole thing when something is wrong. Why would you need a new motor if your wipers have arms have play? What a bunch of crooks!

I would take the linkage / motor assembly out (3 bolts and one electrical plug) then remove the arms to see the shape of the Teflon inserts (take pics). That’s what I plan to do when I have the time (maybe this weekend). Again I can send you the manual pages (2 of them) so you are not flying blind.

ok
i need one arm too =D. I found what happened. The connection between the arm and the motor was loose. The rubber thingy wasnt there anymore. So thats the only connection from the 4 that moved quite a bit, as shown on the pic.

BTW.. The cable is a pain in the ass to disconnect. I recommand unbolting the heatsink first, and then u press the clip underit to release the cable.

If those hinges are not riveted, you should be able to cut some new washers from rubber stock that should work fine.

good luck

Hmm. I dont know if they are riveted or not. They are made out of plastic, probably teflon. I have no idea how to take them out, although there must be a way. The only bolt is the connection to the motor.

Cool. I know that write up said that's the one arm that goes most often. I hope I can get away with just buying 1 arm also! Let us know how it works out once you replace it. And thanks for posting the pics!

The hinge joint in the last picture uses a spring clip to retain the hinge pin. Remove the clip and hinge comes apart. There are special pliers for handling these clips at auto parts store.

good luck

Ok. So i received the part today. Cost me 40$ in total.. not bad, considering the stealership was almost forcing me to buy the whole thing at 340$...

Anyways..The part is a little bit different, it is bent a little bit, the original arm is straight. What i said about a missing rubber part. Forget about it, it was that at all, its actually the nilon clip that was broken, and came loose from the hinge. :P That clip is allready on the arm, so u dont have to worry about it.

To remove the arm, you just need a screwdriver, and pry it open, itll just pop-off, dont need and special tools. Dont try to pry the clip, pry the hole arm :P. And then.. position the new one, and press really hard on both ends. U wont hear a click but you will feel it because there is what i guess is lubricant oozing out from the clip.

Works #1 now! and very easy to fix :-)

Sorry, i have no pics, my camera died on me, but it took me 2 hours from the time i opened the plastic packaging with the new arm, and thats including sanding the wiper arms and re-painting them gloss black with some clearcoat. :P

I bought number 11. That the transmission arm, it comes with the nylon clip, which was broken. U can't buy the clip separatly.

I depends on which clip is broken on urs, so the best is to take it appart, it takes 10 minuts, and check it out, you will see right away which arm is to be replaced.

Dont bother ordering the piece, its not that expensive.
