P0401 Code - port plugs
Hi,
I am in the middle of gather info for cleaning my EGR. On videos they say you have to pull the old plugs (where are they located?)
Clean the ports with a brush, Where do i get these plugs from. i live Near Bellingham, Washington state.
Acura has the egr Kit for 184USD
i have seen videos on the 98 accord and the ports were cleaned by removing this metal Gasket like peice of metal that was taken off by screws and put back on. Iv seen this done to a prelude and it was those plugs. Does anyone know if the 97 3.0cl has those plugs i have to remove with a slide hammer and replace them.

old plugs? I didn't pull anything except the intake and throttle body. here is a DIY that I followed, all you have to do is leave off the part where they put the spacer on. https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=615644
Its really simple to do, I did it in less than an hour

So you just cleared out the EGR passage for the manifold and for the actual block? did u push the gunk down or pull it up (its ok if it falls down?
When you cleared out the manifold port, do you need to watch how much carb cleaner you use?
When u took off the manifold. did u replace the Intake manifold gasket that seats it on the block? and the throttle bottle gasket?
are those the only gaskets u have to replace?
at auto zone its 25$ can u ask for a discount? is this expensive for the intake manifold.
Did u get that acura egr kit that fixes the Build up problem for 180$$
What is the gasket spacer kit? what does it do
What did u notice from cleaning this out..
My bulb for my engine light does not work. so im trying to figure that out as well and also trying to get in contact with as many shops to get estimates for a rebuild transmission, the cheapest i got was 3000CDN

I literally just did this for my 97 2.2 (my hands are still dirty). very straight foward only took me about two hours....most of that was fighting with the goo to get it all out.
hope this helps....good luck
Edit: sorry for messing up the multi quote

----->i dont think there is any way to keep it from falling down there...
When you cleared out the manifold port, do you need to watch how much carb cleaner you use?
----->i used a generous amount...no ill effects as of yet

----->if your a firefighter you can get 10% off anything at autozone

I used carb cleaner or injector cleaner (can't remember which one) but either should be safe. I didn't buy any kit and even if you do it will still clog up again sooner or later. That was just an attempt for acura to acknowledge there was a problem and throw something at it to try and fix it, but it still clogs up even with their kit in there. I didn't have to replace any of my gaskets because my engine had just been rebuilt not that long before I did it and I made certain I carefully placed it back where it was. I haven't had any problems as of yet. If you follow that guide and do it exactly like it says you will be all set. I actually had to do mine twice in the same day because I got talking on the phone while doing it and I cleaned the manifold port out and forgot to clean the engine side out, and put it back together and the light was still on, so I tore it back apart and saw what i missed and did it right the second time
I went to Oreillys to get a intake manifold gasket set and there was a miss communication barrier because the gentleman who worked there ordered the bottom gasket set, but there are 2 gaskets and each of them has 3 Holes (each where 3 cylinders ports would go on top of that gaskets. This is called the bottom set.
There is the top part of the intake manifold where the throttle body mounts to.
There is a set of gaskets where one of the gaskets is a one piece with 6 holes (in the picture on the computer at Oreilly's they look smaller (6 ports)
This kit includes other gaskets as well which i have no idea where they go but it looks as if one gasket in that set belongs to the throttle body.
Is this set of gaskets called the top gasket set?
Fel-pro gasket set
MS96167 (i cant tell by the guys writing on this peice of paper im coping this from but the S could be a 5 possibly)

The Throttle body doesn't bolt to the top, it bolts to the side. Nothing bolts on top of the intake. Mine was 1 piece so I have never seen a 2 piece gasket. Mine was exactly like the one in the DIY. Maybe others have seen these 2 piece gasket set but I know mine didn't have it so not sure its the correct one. They may have changed the gaskets but I just don't know what to tell you about it since that wasn't what mine looked like when I did mine
i meant the top intake manifold top gasket set. The throttle body mounts to the Right side (when looking at the engine) ya you are right.
because there are the upper and lower gasket set for the intake manifold..

thats ok, i didnt buy it i saw them i was like this is not right.
Make sure u ask for the upper, most of the ppl didnt catch that but most know the upper.
Now there is a specific name for it "air something gasket set"
but anyways get the upper (plenum gaskets)

Im still wondering about the egr brass plugs.
im thinking it only exists on some cars. mostly hondas.
This still makes me wonder if i need or will have to remove them if they are there. I have no idea if they are on my car...
Does anybody know
In this video, he pulls out egr port plugs with a slide hammer.
Near the end of this video you will see the plugs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNTBkXWC2A8
In this video it is an accord and there are no egr port plugs, its a metal gasket that can be unbolted.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8N-SE047VY
The gasket im talking about he takes off at about 2 minutes 40 seconds.
Does the 97 3.0cl have the same configuration or is the only passage to clean from the intake manifold and the block egr port?
Thank you

im pretty sure the plugs were on the CB7 accords...honda has since wised up and removed the PITA plugs...i just did my 2.2 and had no plugs to deal with. the 2.3 will not have plugs either...i cant comment on the 3.0 engine however...

That video should help you. His short, fragmented clips annoy me but it should give you a general idea. I'm going to be doing this to my 3.0 within the next few weeks even though I don't have a check engine light on...just as preventative maintenance.

ya iv seen this guys vids, i want more videos on the step by step, even tho i have an idea of how it goes just to reinfoce it. What is the electrical wire he was talking about?
I see he has that end piece of the manifold unbolted, is the wire in there.
I will record my time doing the egr..
i will post it up on here, hope anyone can advantage from it.
im going to pick me up my gasket i ordered and the throttle body cleaners - 3 bottles of em.

man all I can tell you is if you follow the link I posted and do just the part that is talking about cleaning the EGR port you will be fine. That is all I did and have had no problems. I didn't even unbolt the EGR from the manifold, I just dug the port holes with a drill bit and cleaner
alright, sounds good i will do just that and i will make a video of this for anyone who has a similar vehicle.
Its hard to find anything of this particular car.
I am also doing the front motor mount.. as well.
and doing a video on finding the vacuum leak from propane.

Alright!! i finished editing the video i made on cleaning the EGR port
The video is broken up in small clips but i think its all there, I didnt go crazy indepth but i think its informative enough, hope it helps you guys.
BTW there are not egr port plugs needed hahaha

Really, the Negative is ground as well or at least the car is grounded through that anyways.
Iv always used this method throughout my career, iv learned this way.
Maybe iv been doing it wrong the whole time.
Thanks tho
