overheating

Ok, new issue with this. I bought the new radiator cap and now I don't have fluid and air coming out of the overflow.

Now the temperature seems uneven when driving and when stopped the gauge climbs all the way to the top.

I have not checked the hoses and I'm not sure where the thermostat or water pump is.

What could be the problem?

Just checked the coolant level and it was low. I guess my faulty radiator cap let go of more coolant then i would have realized. I'll test drive it.

Background:

First I have been told that the car has a bad rear main seal. I know it needs to be repaired but I was quoted $1000 and i don't have that right now. Oil leaks slowly but never more then a quart per month or month and a half.

I had some front end damage, mainly just the hood, the bumper got a little scraped but still usable, also replaced the driver side headlight. I did not check immediately but I overheated a few of days later. When I checked I found the overflow reservoir with the cap off. I assume this is where the coolant leaked from originally. I also had a bad radiator cap which I did not check at the time. I got a new radiator cap and added new coolant after draining the radiator. I just added new coolant to the radiator and not the reservoir. So when I checked again the next day I found it low and had to add some. I checked again this morning and had to add some and I added some to the reservoir so that it is halfway between the low and max lines in the overflow reservoir.

I might have a leak but I am not sure. I test drove it last night for about an hour and did not overheat. I checked all the hoses and did not see any new fluid on the ground. I also do not see white smoke coming out of the exhaust.

I'm not sure i have a problem at this point but if I do have a leak, any suggestions?

My car overheated last night. Luckily I wasn't far away so they towed it for free. I have a leak somewhere but can't find out where its coming from. When I got back to my house I noticed I had a puddle of coolant sitting in my driveway. I put water in and ran my car and nothing, no leaks. I tried searching the forums a bit but didn't see anything that answered this.

I guess the first step would be to check where it is leaking from (if at all). If its leaking near the engine, that means bad news. If it is leaking from the radiator, that means cheap and inexpensive fix. The next time you drive it, park it on a dry area and check later for any spots on the ground. Compare that location to where it would be dripping from your car and report back

You can hardwire the fan to the battery and test it, it should also come on when the AC is on. If it works from a hardwire, but never comes on, it could be a relay issue. If the hardwire trick seems intimidating, DONT DO IT, get someone else who knows what they are doing to play with the wires. If you are sure it is broken, its an easy fix on the 2.2/2.3 CL.

If you have electric fans then turn the air conditioner on. In my cl I have two fans and when the air is on both fans spin up.

Took my radiator out today and found out something had gotten in the fan and bounced between the fan and radiator.. Punctured the radiator. Seeing if it can get fixed or if I should buy a new one. OEM better than aftermarket?

as long as there are no leaks it doesn't matter if its from a 42 Ford when talking about a radiator. The only problem would be mounting the 42 ford radiator to the car but it would do just as the original does if you could mount it. So my answer is aftermarket is fine as long as the mounts are the same and there are no leaks and has the same amount of cores (the more cores a radiator has the more it cools, because more coolant in the radiator). I am not sure cores plays a role in these newer cars (they are probably 2 or 3 core radiators) but I am used to muscle cars where swapping engines in the norm and when going from a small block to big block you may have to change radiators to one with more cores if the original doesn't sufficiently cool the engine.
