Unhappy My car is throwing a couple codes. Need some help.

Last week I was driving home from work and my check engine light came on. The next day I took my car over to autozone to check the code. He scanned it and it came up with the P0420 cat efficiency bank 1. I asked the guy if he could reset it but he said he cannot do that. A couple of days later I took the car over to my mechanic and I got some bad news. He told me cat was bad and Honda put out a service bulletin that when you replace the cat, you must replace the rear o2 sensor with it. He also told me the car is also throwing the P1336 TDC 2 Sensor code which takes a lot of time to fix so it is going to be expensive. This also explains why my car has been having cold start problems lately. To fix everything the cost is going to be about $1200. I told him I have to fix one thing at a time since I am a college student and money is tight right now. I do not have emissions until summer 2010. So my question is which problem should I get fixed first, and how long should I wait to fix these problems? Also, should I try to reset the ECU in the meantime?

Need to know what year/model/engine you have to provide any help.

P0420 can wait, but you won't pass an emissions test w/o fixing. The TDC sensor error may cause problems w/ starting, but as long as engine is running it may be OK.

good luck

Hey, Thanks for the reply. My car is a 98 3.0, and lately the car has been idling kinda rough when I start it for the first time for the day. I was told that was the TDC sensor causing that. Other than that, the car still runs very smooth. Like I said earlier, I do not have to take an emissions test until a year and a half from now (Illinois emissions every two years). So I was wondering if I should fix the TDC sensor first, since the P0420 probably wont cause any driveability problems.

The TDC sensor may be under the timing belt covers, and an expensive replacement, but your plan is good.

good luck
