Minor Vibrations
Minor Vibrations
Hey guys,
Well as always. Click, click, click means CV joints are going bad. Both of my boots were full split. So i got 2 half shafts replaced for $274 at a shop. Is that a good deal? My brother worked there and got a discount. He said that they were brand new half shafts that were put in. Also i got an aliment done, NO tire balance because they were just fine before. I was in an rear end accident and he said that my rear tires were camber in (toe in). I took it out for a spin and everything seemed fine. Car drives a lot better but i noticed a very very minor vibration from 2nd to 3rd gear. My front end i can tell vibrates, barely noticeable, but if you really pay attention you can notice it. And this wasn't happening before. ANY thoughts? bad half shafts?

Firstly, $274 for two new front driveshafts is a decent deal. Good off-brand shafts are around $64 [oem shafts are $179 a piece], so you got a great labor rate.
The vibration has nothing to do with the new shafts, but may be related to the work:
- Its possible that something has not been fully seated and/or torqued
- Your alignment may have been tweaked
Its worth asking them to take a look around in case anything is not quite tight enough, and if that doesn't help, check your alignment. If its out, you'll chew through front tires very quickly.

Do you feel it in the steering wheel or in your seat? Or does it feel that the car is bouncing up and down.
I had something similar to this when I bought some tires several years back. The tires were not within specs for roundness. This odd shape caused a minor vibration at a speed similar to yours.
Could be:
-Tire roundness/balance/tread pattern that makes weird high pitch noise at certain speeds;
-Lugs not torqued properly;
-Wheel bent/out of shape;
-New half shafts are not within spec or tolerance (1 thou of an inch there can be translated to 10-15thou at the wheel/tire making vibration - it gets amplified);
-Brake rotors warped ^^^ same theory;
-Natural harmonic of the veh at that speed/worn motor mount.
In all honesty, you might be over sensitive. I am very very similar, and notice small changes in how my car behaves. Sometimes it is just a small vibration that was blocked out from something larger before.
Good luck

If that is the case, jack the car up and rotate each tire/wheel while still on the car. Place chalk in a sturdy stand and touch up and see if there are high low spots on the tires. If it seems like a lot you may need new tires. If you have a dial indicator (measures thousands of an inch) you can measure that run out and should not be more than 25-30 thou
Good luck!

Good luck!
