loud click when starting to move in reverse

I have an odd problem with my 1999 3.0. Once I start moving in reverse, after the first 3 feet or so I hear a loud click from underneath the car. I've owned the car for 5 years and this is definitely a new sound. However, it does not happen every time. I only hear it the first time I back up. If I've already backed up once, I don't hear it anymore until I turn off the car, put it in park, then go back into reverse. Also, I found that I can reduce the frequency of this sound happening by first going into neutral, waiting a second, then putting it in reverse, waiting again, then starting to move. However, if i set off immediately, I hear the sound every time.

The tranny has no problems otherwise under normal driving circumstances.

Anyone got any ideas?
