Hello Guys,
I’ m having a problem and was wondering if some know about the solution. I wanted to use my car like usually in the morning today and I couldn’t turn the key in the ignition. The key is at lock and there is no way to turn it even to the accessory position.
I tried everything (turning the steering wheel while turning the key, I played in the speed control, open/close door) and nothing seem to work.
I heard that changing the ignition is very expensive, is there any idea ?

did you try jiggling the steering wheel (not turning, "jiggling") while turning the key?

It sometimes happens to me when i park over night and too lazy to straighten the wheels...

If that's not the case than i think there's an ignition recall for the 97... search!

Edit: if your key cylinder is busted, you can buy a replacement online and install it yourselves, it's an intermediate to hard job (a 7 out of 10 difficulty)... but not impossible.

 

the ignition recall doesnt apply to 97 2.2's..........
it may be your key, my camry has that problem from a poor cut key. so try another key out.

 

Thanks Sleep_DEPRIVED_Sleeper and AznX TL, your advices helped me lot. After jiggling while keeping pressing on the key for a couple of minutes the key finished by turning and the car turned on. But the problem is still there because when I took off the keys I had to jiggle again to be able to turn it. I guess I have to change the ignition.
Apparently there is no used ones in the area of Montreal. Which website do you advice for buying ?
