Immobilizer - Lesson Learned

I got a good deal on a '97 CL project (low kmage, no codes, minor damage), but it only came with one metal key and no fob. Yesterday after work the immobilizer was somehow activated and the starter wouldn't engage while the glovebox and dash lights flashed and chimes chimed. I tried calling the local dealer for help, but they wanted me to tow it in and get a set of keys cut. I didn't feel like spending hundreds of dollars on something that I could research and possibly solve myself, so I thought I'd share the results.

If you're ever in a situation like mine, grab the keys and leave the vehicle. With the door closed, insert the key and turn the door lock cylinder clockwise to its limit and hold for a few seconds. Reenter the vehicle and you will be able to start it.

97 didn't have the immobilizer, only the 98 and 99 do. Maybe you have an aftermarket alarm?

The only security system I see is stock, no decals or modules for an aftermarket alarm. When you lock the doors and later attempt to open a locked door or jostle the hood, headlights and dash lights flash and I assume the horn would be blaring, if it worked. When you get into the car in this state, the ignition is disengaged. If that's not an immobilizer, I guess I don't know what one is, but I can disable it by turning the driver's side lock cylinder and hold it for a few seconds.
