High pitch whistle

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a 97 3.0 CL and I've got a bit of a problem that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on. Recently, the car started to make a whistling sound when I accelerate. The more accelerating, the whistle sound becomes a higher pitch. It sounds like it coming from either underneath me, the pedal, or behind the front console.

Any idea what it could be? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
j

Before my alternator went, I had the same whistling. Yours might be on the way out too.

, sounds like it could be the alternator. You might notice some weird charge issues on the battery as the alternator starts to die.

Rev the engine at the throttle cables under the hood and see if you can isolate that noise further.

You can test the alternator. Grab a multimeter and check at the battery terminals. You should be getting around 12-14 volts. If you don't have access to a multimeter, start the car and disconnect the negative battery terminal. If the car shuts off, you need a new alternator.

mine turned out to be a tensioner pully. Listen around the timing belt cover.
