help! my car wont stop starting.
yes, thats right. so i went to start my car. it started fine then started making a weird humming noise. i turned the car off and took the key out, yet it kept trying to start itself, turning over the engine over and over and over. and when it was doing this i didnt even have to push in the clutch for it to start. i ended up disconnecting the battery real quick and it is now sitting at a friends house. does anyone have an idea about whats going on?
Does the starter grind or spin without turning the fylwheel? Does the starter continue to run even after you turn the key from START(III) to ON(II)? If either of there things happen, look for an aftermarket device (security system, starter cut-off switch, etc) installed between the ignition switch and the starter. These components can cause erratic starter operation. 1 If the starter works OK when you bypass the aftermarket device, advise the customer that it should be removed from the car. 2 If the starter still doesn't work when you bypass the aftermarket device, or if no such device is installed, check for a problem with the starter, the starter wiring and the flywheel ring gear. This is all i could find when i searched, I'll keep looking and post if i find anything. Hope this Helps
i went to take care of it today. it is definitely the starter. the bug seemed to fix itself momentarily. the starters offically gone out. im buying a new one to install tomorrow and see how it works after that. ill also look into the ignition switch recall. thanks for the help guys
I had a camaro z28 that did this. It didn't actually turn the motor over but it was staying kicked in and ran the battery down when the car was turned off. It finally burnt the starter out and I had to push it off to start it but I think it was the solenoid instead of the starter itself. I am not sure if they are seperate on honda''s/acura's or not but on the chevrolets the solenoid just bolts to the top of the starter and it is what kicks the gear out to engage the flywheel to turn the engine over. Sounds like yours was stuck kicked out and stuck spinning. When you unplugged the battery it probably went back to normal until it gets stuck again, or it will just burn completely out
I'm guessing your CL is a manual? When the starter solenoid started to get gunked on mine it would do that. I would just grab the tire iron out of the back and beat on it. I don't think the auto's have that "external" solenoid.
For future reference, our starter is a denso and you can buy the solenoid contact rebuild kit from a toyota dealer. I think if you just google "integra starter solenoid rebuild" it will come up with the H-T thread. The parts are about $8 and need to be ordered by most dealers, not stocked normally.
