help, i cannot remove alternator

I know I have to release the "accessory belt tensioner" but i'm not exactly sure what this is. I believe its the pulley just below the alternator, but i cannot seem to find the right tool to fit in there and Chiltons book gives no help.

Am I even supposed to mess with that or do I have to turn the bolt inside the pulley on the alternator itself??? I tried this but it seems to move the whole belt system.

Please help, i need my car back soon....

the belt tensioner, just loosen it up with a socket, push down on the tensioner ( it keeps tension on the belt, and pushes down to release the belt. ) and remove the whole belt. This is where it helps to have a buddy handy and remember how the belt went on.

BTW, are we talking 2.2, 2.3, or 3.0 engine here?
